Funeral today for 9-year-old girl waiting on medical marijuana

WEST SENECA, N.Y. -- Friends, family and community members crowded into a church in West Seneca Wednesday morning to say final farewells to a little girl whose story touched all of Western New York.

For more than 8 months, 2 On Your Side has been following the journey of 9-year-old Anna Conte.

Anna had Dravet Syndrome, which caused her to have uncontrollable seizures.

Anna and her family were relentless in pressuring state leaders to pass a medical marijuana program, because a special oil-based version of cannabis worked wonders for kids in other states where it was legal.

Finally, the state legislature passed a bill and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed it into law. However, at the governor's insistence, the State Health Department has 18 months or longer to get the program up and running.

That proved to be too long for little Anna. Earlier this month, a seizure put her in a coma, and she never recovered.

A fund has been set up in Anna's memory. You can donate to the "For the Love of Anna Needs Fund" at any M&T Bank branch in WNY.

The Conte's and other families continue to press the state to expedite access for medical marijuana for children who need it.

Christine Emerson's little girl Julia also has Dravet Syndrome. They were at Anna's funeral.

"The service was beautiful, and it was a great representation of who Anna was," Christine said. "Just full of life."

Christine has a simple message to Governor Cuomo.

"Flat out, it's just not good enough," Christine said. "It's not good enough, and if this were his loved one, I'm pretty sure that he would make a different decision. Our kids deserve better."

Legal or not, pot is available anywhere in the country. That is a fact. This in spite of the ever escalating war on drugs. We spent trillions, ran the 4th amendment through the shredder and are now ruling that tossing a flash bang into a crib is proper police action.

You may now return to your Holy war.

No, not pot, a non-psychoactive extract oil, mentioned in the article. But just as illegal as pot.

Pot is so uniquely and toweringly awful that anything associated with it must be fought tooth and nail: non-psychoactive extract oil, hemp, ...

Why? I have no idea.

They were on a waiting list[in Colorado] for Charlottes Web, the form of cannabis that helps some people with seizures. So while they were waiting for their turn of the drug they lobbied for change in NY.

It was never about sitting on their asses. There is only so much of the availability of the substance as of now. Nor do I care if it works or not for them. But they should have the ability to decide their own healthcare without .Gov getting in the way.

Right now marijuana is getting caught up in the “wonder drug disappointment”, that invariably happens when some new “wonder drug” enters the market. People truly hope that the new drug will solve all their ills, and though it might show some promise for just a few problems, that’s it. Not really a wonder drug.

In this particular case, a marijuana *derivative* might have worked for her, or not. Seizures cause damage, and over time, often lethal damage. While an anti-seizure drug might stop future damage, it cannot repair the damage that already exists.

Severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy also known as Dravet syndrome is a type of epilepsy with seizures that are often triggered by hot temperatures or fever. It often begins around six months of age.

So for perhaps 8 years, she has been damaged by the disease. Even odds that this was too long a time, so she was going to die anyway.

Importantly, remember that there are many Democrats who *want* babies and children to die, with their evil Malthusian mindset. It is not beyond them to try and delay and deny medicines that might help children live.

If the science was actually valid she already had access via prescription pills. If the dosage was the issue it can be reduced.

This is just a fluff piece to help civil plaintiff lawyers have access to insurance by shifting cases out of criminal and into civil courts. Criminal acts preclude claims on insurance. Decriminalizing drugs means the insurance companies (and those who pay for insurance) will now have to financially pay for the deeds of potheads.

is it distributed in a medicinal container? I travel with my medicine in my purse and have not had anyone questioning what it is, or what it has been prescribed for.

I am sorry this child died, I lost and 18 year old and I know how devastating it is to lose one but if I thought that moving to another state would have saved him I would have moved immediately!

the pill form is legal in all states. This story makes no valid point.

There is no pill form of the CBD extract that is used to treat these children. None. Marinol is not the same thing.

No, the POT would not have saved her

Which levels from her chart (that you read) lead you to believe this?

You sound like a liberal saying that you know for sure that a shooting victim wouldn't have been saved if someone other than the bad guy had a weapon.

How about you let citizens, parents and medical personnel do what ever they want to do (as long as they aren't hurting anyone) and just butt out?

You can't help telling others what to do because...Statists gonna State.

They were in the process of moving. They did not anticipate that Cuomo would delay access for a year and half when he signed the law. They didn’t think the would have to move until he did that.

Sad for the kid and parents, but if they were waiting on the government to come to their rescue, they took the wrong route.

Why do you say they were waiting on the government to come to their rescue?

They were waiting on the government to get out of the way.

Yes. And we should go along with the program. For the children.

That’s what we are supposed to conclude.

Really? And where can you prove that POT would have saved her life?

No, you sound more like a Liberal turd promoting your POT agenda.

And your statist BS could be applied to any law. We are a nation of laws and
not supporting the wants of the POT class doesn't apply.

Marijuana/Drugs for recreation are for losers and disrupts the fabric of society, period.

And your stupid Shooting argument is a joke. You do not belong on FR
spouting your Liberal agenda.

Medical ANYTHING should be available in these cases. If it helps ease pain, seizures, what’s the big deal?

She is going to die but why not make it more comfortable. What’s the difference between this and the other drugs like morphine or whatever they use in hospitals?

I am not a smoker, but I hope something as simple as this would be available to make dying easier when I do go as cancer is a possibility.

Big Pharm & the Gov. wouldn’t like it if their cash cow were taken away.
