Why would they bother, when Obama will give them some free?
That would be an act of war on our part. Once you start down that path, how far do you want to go? What level of Russian retaliation do you expect from that move? Then what shall we do in return? And then...? These are questions to resolve BEFORE we get involved in a war on Russia's border. What many Americans now tend to view as a distant adventure will be an existential threat to Russia, and such a threat justifies total war. This is not our fight.

It's not an act of war if we make them pay for them. It's really no different than selling F16's to Poland, or letting Croatia join NATO.
I assume that whatever we would do would be as part of NATO.
