Treasure: 60 lbs of silver coins hidden for decades. Thousands of silver coins dating to early 1900's showered from a secret hiding place when a century-old home was demolished .
...
The house was full of Florida junk," neighbor Jim Tuck said Friday about the 60 pounds of silver coins discovered in the recently demolished North Minnesota Avenue home. "It was grab, grab, grab and then talk, talk, talk."
Stored for decades inside the walls, large glass pickle jars holding the more than 2,000 coins shattered when a crew of St. Cloud city workers leveled 1915 bungalow on April 22.
At least one large construction Dumpster had been removed before a member of the crew kept hearing the sound of metal pouring out of the walls.
"It was like a treasure hunt the more you dug the more you found," said Melissa Howes of city code enforcement, laughing about the scramble to find more. "We thought we might be able to keep it like finders keepers, but it was city property."
...
The last owner of the house, Lamarr LoMax Lowe, abandoned it last year after failing to pay $511,500 in code-enforcement liens including daily $250 fines for more than 10 years.
...
Howes said she thinks more coins were taken to the dump before the treasure was discovered. "I'm not kidding."

So much in this story.
For instance: imagine the value of 30 kg of paper dollar bills from the 1900’s, after they’d been in a wall for a hundred years.
Approximately zero.
I should add - of course - that paper dollars from the 1900’s would be worth a lot if in mint condition. But stuck in a derelict building, ouch.
A guy I knew whose cousin was a NYC garbage man told me his cousin once hauled off a big load of ‘junk’ from the house of a jeweler who had died. In one of the boxes, they found some gold bars.
Garbage men are not supposed to keep anything they find in the garbage, but of course they do. They all have a big compartment in the truck to stow any goodies they find.
“... failing to pay $511,500 in code-enforcement liens”
Why isn’t THIS the story ??? Just how can the bureaucrats THAT WORK FOR US, acquire this sort of debt ???
MARCH ON CITY HALL
I’m imagining the reaction of Serge Storms to the news of the demolition of a house full of “Florida junk”....
The Current FReepathon Pays For The Current Quarter's Expenses?
Way to cause a run on the dump...
Sweet find! Take a metal detector to the dump and search for true buried treasure!
One thing you can count on...whenever anyone discovers a “treasure trove” the gub’mint won’t waste anytime arriving on the scene to declare and seize it stating that it’s a historical antiquity that must be preserved for the public good then seize the items and store them at some Indiana Jones style government facility where they are are never seen again or miraculously come into personal possession of a government official. If I found a trove I’d shut my mouth.

We’re the code violations assessed before or after the treasure trove was found. I can almost see a special session of the city council meeting...
“How much do you think those silver coins are worth?”
“Estimating by the number of them probably $500K”
“Okay, I want code enforcement to create violations totallling at least $500K”
I’m on it sir. I’ll even add in a little extra just in case there’s a little more than we thought”

Were the code violations assessed before or after the treasure trove was found? I can almost see a special session of the city council meeting...

If only it was that easy. Would be major headache if you’ve ever owned a metal detector. All the metal cans and all. Pull tabs have caused many a treasure hunter to curse...: )
They all have a big compartment in the truck to stow any goodies they find.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. ;)
You sure people know who Serge and Coleman are here? :)
As an owner of two metal detectors I can say that taking them to the dump would be an exercise in futility...
“Garbage men are not supposed to keep anything they find in the garbage, but of course they do.”
Back in the days before garage/yard sales, I worked for a guy that did hauling. You would be surprised what people paid to have hauled away.
We found guns, jewelry, and antiques on a regular basis, along with tools and other valuables.
I found an original 45/70 Sharps and one of the first lightbulbs ever made, in working condition!
No you are wrong, the paper money in the early 1900’s was backed by gold and silver, so the bills for silver or gold.
If it didn’t have over $500k in fines attached to it perhaps it could have SOLD before it became so derelict that it needed tearing down! Do you know how many 1915 bungalows are left in Florida? Barely any, what a waste!!!
I once heard of a guy who accidentally threw out a Glock 27.
