MSF says Ebola 'fast,' medics 'facing war-like scenario'

The medical charity MSF has warned that western Africa's Ebola crisis is "moving faster" than medics can cope with. Its warning follows a WHO admission that the epidemic requires "extraordinary measures." The head of Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), Joanne Liu -- fresh from a visit to western Africa -- said in Geneva on Friday that more experts were needed in the hard-hit region.

"It is deteriorating faster, and moving faster, than we can respond to," Liu told reporters. "Like in a war time, we have a total collapse of infrastructure," she added.

Lui said the world community needed to get the "upper hand" over the next six months. While the viral spread had been slowed in Guinea, concerns focused especially on Liberia.

"If we don't stabilize Liberia, we will never stabilize the region," Lui said.

She was critical of the WHO for delaying its public health emergency warning until August 8. "We need people with a hands-on operational mindset," to combat the outbreak, Liu told the Geneva news briefing.

Oh, but we were told that it isn’t really a danger at all.

Is it time to worry yet? Although I’m surprised we haven’t seen large numbers outside of Africa so far.

Who knows - maybe this variety is carried by mosquitoes... that would tend to make it fast and local...

Makes you wonder exactly how altruistic the Chinese gesture olab equipment and medical supplies really is, doesn’t it.

To be truthful, the countries that are experiencing the outbreaks had little infrastructure to begin with.

Take a google image tour of Monrovia, Freetown, and Lagos, a mega-city of more than 20 million complete with 8 lane avenues. There are areas in our nation's Capitol that are no better. Seen photos of Detroit lately. Those areas the fire department won't enter. How about the South Bronx, or parts of Brooklyn. You really think that hospitals and medical staff here wouldn't be quickly overwhelmed? This isn't meant to foster panic but a warning to take stock in the ways we are vulnerable. Recall that with all the metal detectors and airport security four US commercial jets were hijacked and we're still paying the price as a result.

Or they (the ptb) have determined that they will remain safe from it and the economic downside for them outweighs any downside to the peasants.

Disgusting, isn't it? The ptb support chaos all over the world for their financial gain and acquisition of land, resources, and control. There are refugee camps and war zones that will be horrific death traps if Ebola gets in there. I'm almost cynical enough to wonder if the ptb are saying "that's okay" because there's nowhere to put the displaced people.

When will it be time for the elite to retreat to their gated communities, islands, yachts and countries with populations they control? I'm assuming that there is already a cure or vaccine for Ebola, but only in quantities such that it will be restricted to people who matter.

Meanwhile, one of the potential medications is derived from tobacco. Wouldn't it be ironic if tobacco could ward off Ebola? I wonder if there any statistics about if smokers are less likely to get infected.

So many questions, so many real concerns. I hope things can be brought back to sanity. It's just that so many situations could spin out of control at the same time. It is important for people to be concerned and aware of how things are unfolding. If it gets real bad, us little folk will be on our own.

Joe, please add me to the *PING* list. Mainly on account of this: Watching Ebola outbreak, Minnesotans scramble their travel plans

...as I live in Minneapolis. The fecal material is about to hit the rotary air impeller, I fear.

You have been added to the list. Please also check out the Ebola Surveillance Thread. There are many links there, some of which don't get posted as threads.

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

In the Catholic Church, 16 August is celebrated as the Feast Day of St. Roch — called St. Rocco by the Italians. His intercession is believed to be helpful against the plague. Interesting co-incidence....
