~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Bragg, North Carolina

Fort Bragg is a major United States Army installation located in Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett and Moore counties, North Carolina, mostly in Fayetteville but also partly in the town of Spring Lake.

The fort is named for Confederate general Braxton Bragg. It covers over 251 square miles. It is the home of the US Army airborne forces and Special Forces, as well as U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command.

Fort Bragg, NC absorbed FORSCOM (Forces Command) and USARC (US Army Reserve Command) from Fort McPherson, GA in 2011 as an outcome of the 2005 BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission).

Fort Bragg retained its name and increased its population by 25,000. The consolidation made Fort Bragg the largest US Army command for sustained forces capable of worldwide crisis response.

There are 29,183 people, 4,315 households, and 4,215 families residing on the base. The base is the one of the main garrisons for deployments to IRAQ & Afghanistan wars. The units based at the mission have conducted two, three, or even four or more deployments to combat zones in IRAQ & Afghanistan.

Fort Bragg is tasked to maintain America’s Contingency Corps as a strategic crisis response force manned and trained to deploy rapidly by air, sea, and land anywhere in the world with the ability to fight upon arrival. The major units are XVIII Airborne Corps, 82nd Airborne Division, The Golden Knights, FORSCOM and USARC.

Tenant organizations at Fort Bragg include MEDDAC (Medical Command), Womack Army Medical Center, Special Forces, and John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

Good morning, AAM ((HUGS))

Now I have to talk to hubby about Bragg, see if he’s familiar with him (almost positive he is) and let him fill me in.

Nope! They slept through the whole thing. One of them escaped by tearing a hole in their wooden fence and then getting tangled in my wysteria which covers part of that fence....right under my bedroom window.

No WAY was I going out there. That dog is a big, mean pit bull and I’m terrified of them in broad daylight, much less in the middle of the night. Hubby sleeps through anything! LOL!

Can you discuss this with the neighbor?

If their pits are dangerous, it should be reported if they can’t keep them penned.

Since they were ancestors . . . . :-D yes!

Lost a lot of relatives though, cousins killed at Shiloh, at Resaca and at Tunnel Hill. My g-g grandmother's oldest sister's husband, John Stewart, was killed at Shiloh and his body was never found. My g-g grandfather was one of his best friends in the same unit. He was wounded, and while he was in the service his wife died laboring of twins (who died with her). He had one surviving child (my g grandmother) and never remarried. I get the impression from family letters that he had PTSD but of course nobody understood that then.

Another g-g grandfather was wounded at Shiloh, also at Nashville and at Chickamauga. He was a lawyer and banker in Eufaula AL and the Commander of the local UCV after the War. They invited Sherman to come speak - to a standing o. (Sherman was much loved in the South after the War because he opposed Reconstruction.)

Still another g-g grandfather led a charmed life - he was the classic combination of humility (almost shyness) and incredible bravery. He did a lot of valiant (some would say stupid) stuff as a cavalryman/ "partisan ranger" and never caught a scratch. Came home afterwards, went back to farming, had a bunch of kids, lived into his 80s.

It's going OK.

I made an unscheduled visit to the dentist yesterday. I had a couple of teeth repaired. One of them had a chipped area which I first noticed Saturday morning. The other was not in very good shape and needed to be fixed.

I'm taking Bo to the vet later this morning for his monthly dose of anti-flea spray.

It is hot today. Taking it easy out there.

My sympathies.I hate dogs barking at night...It’s been a long time since I have endured the noise...My husband used to sleep through anything, too.

seems you did a lot of research into family history. I haven’t found any in ours that were involved in the war.

and BTW, just because they were ancestors doesn’t mean they survived Bragg...just could have left behind heirs that became your family. Unless we are talking about two different things :)
