Windows 9 has been leaked, and seems to show a backing away from the aggressively touch-focused Windows 8, with a mini start menu and dropping of the Charms bar, but we’ll get a better look September 30, according to the Verge. The blog reports Microsoft is planning an official unveiling of what’s next for its desktop OS for that date, with a technology preview available for early adopters following quickly after that.
The upcoming Windows 9 release is codenamed ‘Threshold,’ and expectations are that we’ll see it arrive for the general public as a stable release sometime early next year. Previously, we covered what might be happening with the new release, which suggests that the desktop might be getting a return to glory in the new version – think more Windows 7 in your Windows 8 experience. Expectations are that Modern Windows (aka Metro) will still exist in the next generation, but it’ll be more closely integrated with the desktop side, with apps running in windowed mode instead of requiring you to switch between the two environments.
As a fairly frequent Windows user, but mostly on a desktop gaming PC, I’m excited about the new (old) direction Microsoft’s OS is apparently headed in – let’s hope they don’t go in a different direction what they actually unveil in late September.
That's what the Open Document Standard is for, which Microsoft now complies with.
Still, that really only applies to fonts and formatting. Microsoft Office's "extras" such as DDE, OLE, VBScript and other features which are commonly used by MS Office users / power users are what keeps people "locked into" Microsoft.
For basic word processing (document creation, editing, exchange) Libre Office or any of the other Open Source office solutions work just fine.
Given I work for a large international bank, getting them to switch to something other than MS Office has to be a VERY compelling financial story (as was the case with our Server environment moving all development to Java/Open Systems which has been hugely successful the past 10 years.)

They likely have dozens of programs running in the background, a lot of younger people do that and wonder why it goes so slow.
A Microsoft team visited China a few years ago and plucked coomputers right off the assembly line. Malware and viruses were present.
There couldn't have been any consumer testing of that "charms bar". if there were they'd have at least put it somewhere besides the right hand side.
Oh geez. Solid state hard drive or not? That is the question.
We have two Macs and two Windows laptops at my house. Windows is 7 and 8.1 respectively.
I don’t see any superiority in the Mac software or hardware, in fact I’ve had more hardware problems with the Macs, one requiring DVD replacement and the other needed to be replaced entirely after the graphics card died within a week of purchase.
As far as software, both seem to never need to be rebooted but the Windows will get rebooted about once a month because the software has been updated.
I think it is a Coke vs. Pepsi thing.
That is what I was thinking. This weekend will check for all sorts of things including for virus programs constantly doing a hard drive search every time they start the computer.
I definitely do not find the imac to be $900 better.

DUMB file transfers....EVERYTHING should be drag and drop IMO..not random between drag and drop and export and copy etc etc. VERY annoying when I work with photos all the time ..which is all the time.
$70 “magic mouse” FAR WORSE than $5 two button wireless PC mouse. Slow cursor that i had to adjust with extra program, and the cheap sold-out-of-a-barrel wireless pc mouse is far far more accurate than the Apple magic mouse.
