NORTH LAWNDALE — Dozens of people gathered on a West Side street Monday afternoon to protest the shooting death of 19-year-old Roshad McIntosh, who was killed by police Sunday night.
Thunder boomed overhead and blowing rain hit a blood-soaked porch in the 2800 block of West Polk Street, where McIntosh's mother, Cynthia Lane, stood outside surrounded by supporters.
"I want my baby, they killed my baby," Lane said, sobbing.
Police responded to a call of an armed men at the Polk Street address Sunday around 7:10 p.m., and when they tried to talk to McIntosh, he ran, authorities said.
Police chased him into a gangway, where he pulled a gun and pointed it toward an officer, police said. The officer fired at the man, killing him.
Police said a weapon was recovered on the scene.
But Lawndale residents, friends and family of the teen, say that they don't believe police accounts. Neighbors rallied outside the scene of the shooting Monday to let Chicago police and politicians know they are angry.
Protestors said that McIntosh had no gun and that he was already on his knees with his hands in the air when police shot him. They maintain that in McIntosh's case and many other police-involved shootings on the West Side, cops have been too quick to pull the trigger.
"They can't keep coming into our community and killing our kids," said Marcia Sloan, who helped organized Monday's demonstration. "We have to unite as a community."

Full disclosure - I have a son who is a cop, I, myself was one many years ago. I know full well what they have to deal with on a day to day basis.
Notice that the race of the cops is omitted, probably because they are black. Chicago’s police force is 33% black, 31% white, and 25% Hispanic. 88% of its policemen live in the city.
Long ago Chicago adopted community policing so that patrol officers match their neighborhoods as closely as possible. North Lawndale has been overwhelmingly black and gang dominated for decades, so I assume the officers were black and/or Hispanic.
On his knees and with his hands in the air! And because he had to do that, the puppy he’d been giving CPR to also died!
I have raised two sons who turned that age and am currently raising a third, who is now 14, it is no "piece of cake" and my wife would be the first to tell you that she could not have done it alone.

Apparently every black the cops kill from now on out will be on their knees with their hands in the air.
If I was the cops I’d refuse to answer the calls. Let ‘em kill each other.
Chicago boy, 9, gunned down execution-style after tantrum over cupcake Aug 22nd 2014 11:40AM

A nine-year-old Chicago boy was executed in a back yard in broad daylight after he ran outside upset because he could not have a cupcake.
Antonio Smith was shot multiple times in the chest Wednesday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. outside his South Side apartment building, according to police. His killer still has not been found.
He was a good boy I’m sure.

It is interesting that you only have to go east about 18 blocks from where this occurred and the problems like this in the early evening become more rare.
Seems like it is a neighborhood problem.
Of course there would be issues with the cops, over what they dont want recorded during their days, but they can learn to live with it.
Wait a minute. He was standing with his hands up 20 feet from the officer, wasn’t armed and was on his way to college.
...and he was flying! What an angel.
