What's thought to be an audio recording of the shooting death of Michael Brown has reportedly surfaced. According to CNN, an unidentified man, who has since been interviewed by the FBI, is said to have managed to record the incident in which Michael Brown was shot by Officer Darren Wilson earlier this month, setting off a national firestorm.
The most notable tidbit from the short recording (and what will become subject to the most immediately scrutiny and parsing) is the existence of two distinct volleys of gunfire from Officer Darren Wilson's weapon. From CNN:
class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph3">In the recording, a quick series of shots can be heard, followed by a pause and then another quick succession of shots.
Forensic audio expert Paul Ginsberg analyzed the recording and said he detected at least 10 gunshots -- a cluster of six, followed by four.
The man who recorded the shooting was talking to someone on video chat when the sounds of gunfire erupted in the background. The Daily Mail added:
Lopa Blumenthal, the attorney for the unidentified man who recorded the alleged gunfire nearby said that she believed the audio shows, if it is authentic, that Officer Wilson had a clear 'point of contemplation' while pulling the trigger and aiming at Brown."
Also of some serious importance, should the tape's authenticity be confirmed, is the fact that ten (or, by some counts, eleven) shots were fired at Brown by Wilson.
Here is the segment as it aired on CNN with the audio recording.

Exactly what you hear in the Marine Corp pits!
By the end of the week, you don’t count shots, you count and look for target penetration after the WHUMP! No “WHUMP” you get “Maggie’s drawers” waived at you!
I have heard nothing about Wilson attacking or attempting to attack the other person involved. If Wilson was trying to kill one for pure hate, then why not kill them both?
Let's say they somehow prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they were Officer Wilson's shots.
After being assaulted by Brown there was a struggle for his weapon which was turned on him and a shot fired in the vehicle almost striking him. Officer Wilson regains his weapon and fires 6 rounds at the fleeing Brown, missing him. Those shots being absolutely justified; fleeing, dangerous felon.
Brown then turns and charges the officer...the final 4 shots.
That's just one scenario.
..............You fire six shots at a guy charging you. You think that should be enough. He keeps coming. You unload four more rounds.................
Remember that the officer was in extreme pain from having his eye socket broken, and only one eye working when he was shooting, so perhaps he thought that he missed his target, hitting the right arm, to his left, and corrected his aim, and hit him in the head.
Case closed, Holder go home and rot in hell!
I am so tired of hearing about these emotional to their radical pundits on CNN spew this because they want a specific outcome. Lie and spin, no problem. Why? They hate guns anyway. They don’t want to live with guns in our society. They want only the federals to have guns. And, we all know what that means. Just follow the liberals’ logic. It takes years for them to chip away at our freedoms.
They have no understanding of why officers react to different potential dangerous situations or any citizen. As an excuse, they use what they see or hear; i.e.. rapid or repeated gun shots and then a person is labeled as whacked, so they judge them as being guilty.
They are after this officer, not to find the truth. They want to get the mileage out of excessive force (as they believe) and more people to be against gun violence. They don’t care about blacks being killed. Look at the shootings in Chicago and Oakland. If someone will not stop, who has a right to say just fire one shot. Idiotic. ( It’s like a lot those comments on yahoo. Officer Wilson should have shot once or used spray to Brown’s eyes. Get a life to those people)
Totally bogus for them to tie this to the Brown shooting, absolutely no way to tie it. I was thinking random recording of domestic violence, but yeah, could be a birthday celebration! Or simply a manufactured recording to muddy the waters.
> The software that will do everything you mentioned is called “Cool Edit” (It may have a new name now that Adobe has bought it)
Adobe Audition, I use it every day at work. Just goofing around one time a few years ago, I took a recording of a single gun shot and edited it to make it sound like 50 men were firing multiple shots at each other.
My relative has recording software that goes far beyond those programs. Put it this way he could go in and take out everyone of the gunshots, take a sample of the background noise and lay it in its place and you would never have heard any of the gunshots. Conversely he could take a sample of a guy online chatting sex talk with someone, make a separate track with the guns shots and play them at the sime together and it would all sound like the same event. If he wanted to add gunshots he’d just sample a small sound byte and lay it right in the track, then he’d play it and listen to it and fine tune it until it sounded “real” then master it as all one layer. It’s actually child’s play if you have the right software.
The delay means nothing, I agree.
Could have been he charged, then charged again till the bullet hit the brain.
I had that same thought when listening to the tape. Glad it was not just me thinking it.
There have been accounts indicating that there was a struggle for Wilson’s gun. Who knows if those are accurate? But if there was a struggle for the gun, shots could have been randomly fired.
The audio, if proven authentic, would seem to prove nothing on its own. But it could corroborate eyewitness accounts.
Not echoes. There are two single shots, without any repeat like other shots could be construed as. 1, pause, 5-6 rapid, long pause, 1, pause, 3 rapid. Long pause could be construed as Brown pausing then resuming the threatening approach.
We don’t have the whole recording yet, just the core string of 10+ rounds, so no word on whether there was a muffled bang suitably earlier.
“Officer Wilson regains his weapon and fires 6 rounds at the fleeing Brown, missing him. Those shots being absolutely justified; fleeing, dangerous felon. Brown then turns and charges the officer...the final 4 shots. That’s just one scenario.”
...except that there are at least 6 holes in Brown, all in his front. The “turned around during the pause” theory fails.
If the black can jump to conclusions, so can the white.
Some conclusions seem more likely than others as well.
A further conclusion is that Brown’s accomplice was full of sh!t...surprisingly.
“Or simply a manufactured recording to muddy the waters.”
Except at one extreme it does absolutely nothing for their case (no point in manufacturing pointedly unrelated evidence), and at the other extreme cements the defense (6 shots (4 in arm, 2 misses), pause, Brown _still_ a threat, 4 shots (2 in head, 2 misses) - a very and increasingly plausible scenario).
People faking evidence do not go to lengths to create evidence which proves, or even vaguely suggests, absolutely nothing toward the case as they want it seen. Investigators would have at least screened this to determine probability that one end of the call was within earshot & time of the shooting.
We’re getting into Occam’s Razor territory here: yeah, there are alternate explanations, but the simplest and most sensible one is that it is, in fact, a recording of the shooting. Any other explanation gets really complicated or pointless real fast.
I don't know how to format this in HTML so it's a copy & paste thing.
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
Some of the arm wounds and a chest wound may have been caused by a single bullet. No one knows.
Was there the sound of a round being discharged in the police car?
I am thinking he was punched in the face so hard, he had trouble seeing, maybe his eye was swollen, vision blurry and he needed time to refocus...just a thought..
I wouldn't treat it as a suspected recording of the shooting, unless a witness had come forward prior to it's release describing the sequence of shots and the pauses between clusters of shots. Have there been any news accounts of witnesses describing the shots and pauses just as they occur in the recording? I don't think so. Even then, someone could easily manufacture a matching audio recording. The only relevant description is the recollection of the cop. Does he agree with the sequence of shots in the audio recording?
Or any other "aspiring rap star".
Those self-important DJs have all kinds of sophistic digital recording gear to make their own splices, loops and samples.
if some of the news media would just use google before they spew their ignorant comments they would better understand shootings and use of force..but no, they would rather be willfully ignorant -plausible deniability.
id like to hear the gunshots dubbed over bodyguard browns rap song..
if he was in internet chat there might be a recording on server? I don’t know
His "chat session" should be logged online and traceable.
My question is where does he live? Another shooting occurred recently in St. Louis (or nearby) with two officers firing on a man (who'd robbed a convenience store of 2 cans of drink) and was holding a knife he refused to drop (suicide by cop).
Wikimedia would claim that footage is public domain since the sea turtle owns the copyright, not the camera owner...
How many shots are we talking then?
1 (in the vehicle) then 6 then 4 more? 11? Or 12 by some audio review accounts?
And none of the shots that hit him were in the back, so at least two before the "gap" were while Michael was facing the officer in addition to some after the gap.
My point about the first shot was to highlight a potential omission that potentially undermines the credibility of the recording (i.e., did the makers forget to cover that one or is there some other explanation.) Until this audio clip is established somehow as genuine and unedited (something I doubt), I do not think we can infer anything from it.
Watching Fox versus the other networks on this video is really something. Mark Fuhrman says the video, if real, helps out the cop. Says the cop had to give a statement and tell how many bullets he fired. If the cop’s story is 10 bullets, or eleven, he can always say he shot to stop the attacker, when he saw he was not neutralized, he gathered his thoughts for a couple of seconds and proceeded to fire his weapon until the attacker was neutralized, this time face down on the pavement. The other networks as usual are saying this proves the cop emptied his weapon into the “innocent unarmed teen” who was attempting to surrender. In otherwords the cop murdered him. It’s funny watching the different versions of what people think this audio means. Mark Fuhrman’s analysis is the most credible I’ve heard.
Okay - thanks for that input... I admit being surprised at the rapidity of those initial shots.
‘Furhman’ and ‘credibility’ are two words that should never be in the same sentence.
With training & stress, one can fire quite rapidly. In one week-long handgun class I’ve taken, students start terrified of the final exam requirements as seeming impossibly fast, yet 6 days later they’re blazing thru it with ease - and faster still in subsequent classes.
Note too that Wilson missed nearly half his shots while firing that fast.
How many shots does his gun hold? How many are some “witnesses” and “experts” claiming? How many shells were found?
Good points. Especially the suggestion for Holder. LOL
Now word is the recording is just a Howard Stern prank.
