Eugene Robinson: Being black in America means not being allowed to make mistakes
Mercury News ^ | 08/26/2014 | Eugene Robinson

WASHINGTON -- To be young, male and black in America means not being allowed to make mistakes. Forgetting this, as we've seen so many times, can be fatal.

The case of Michael Brown, who was laid to rest Monday, is anomalous only in that it is so extreme: an unarmed black teenager riddled with bullets by a white police officer in a community plagued by racial tension.

African-Americans make up 67 percent of the population of Ferguson, Mo., but there are just four black officers on the 53-member police force -- which responded to peaceful demonstrations by rolling out military-surplus armored vehicles and firing tear gas. It is easy to understand how Brown and his peers might see the police not as public servants but as troops in an army of occupation.

And yes, Brown made mistakes. He was walking in the middle of the street rather than on the sidewalk, according to witnesses, and he was carrying a box of cigars that he apparently took from a convenience store. Neither is a capital offense.

When Officer Darren Wilson stopped him, did Brown respond with puffed-up attitude? For a young black man, that is a transgression punishable by death.

You know, I've had a bellyful of journalist who quote statistics and make up the conclusion. Why do you suppose there are so few black police in Ferguson? Could it be they aren't qualified (you have to be a high school graduate)? Perhaps they don't want the job. There could be a thousand other reasons. This puff piece simply cannot be explained as a journalistic effort worthy of denuding the nation's forest. Why would a "real journalist" write such a piece of "I'm-a-victim" crap.

Oh...wait a minute...I think I understand now...

And yes, Brown made mistakes.

Every time you make a mistake, you take a chance.

Sometimes you make a big mistake and you get lucky.

Sometimes you make a little mistake and get unlucky.

The more mistakes you make, the more chances to get unlucky.

Nice to see Robinson is continuing the standard lie.

When two individuals are fighting to get a weapon BOTH are deemed to be in possession of the weapon. Hence, Brown was ARMED.

If you’re black you can scream The N Word all day —even make it the key word in a song u sell to the public— and there is no cost.

You can sexually harass women and they’ll shrug it off, “ they’re just like that...”

There are enough good quality videos that these and other thugs should be under arrest by now. But then, AG Holder doesn’t see this as breaking the law, I guess. Funny how distorted that idiot’s view of the law is. Same for his boss’ view of the Constitution.

He is so totally right.
I cannot TELL you the number of times I’ve strong-armed a shop, intimidated the tiny owner, beaten the crap out of a cop while trying to steal his gun then charged him and lived to tell about it.

All because of the tint of my skin.

Some mistakes are more significant than others.

Apparently Mike Brown had been given "the talk". Apparently it didn't register.

Heck, he didn't even have to do THAT. He'd evaded detection, and chose to administer a beating. IOW, he could have broken all sorts of laws, and still avoided being shot, just by refraining from initiating violence.

Being black in America means being held to no standard whatsoever in MOST cases, e.g., your language, your dress....you can walk around with your @$$ hanging out....whatever, with no overt consequences. But go for a LEO’s weapon? Now you’ve jumped the shark, and you may well pay with your life. And if you aren’t wise enough to understand the difference, it’s better if you are no longer around, sludging up the shallow end of the gene pool.

Attacking a cop is a pretty serious mistake.

Also, what about the 4 clean cut white college kids beaten by a black mob in College Station (2 beaten to death).

Or the white mormon kid shot by a black cop in Salt Lake City apparently because he had his music up so loud he didn’t hear the cop? Was that racist?

Race pimp. If you’re not part of the solution there’s good money in prolonging the problem as someone stated.

Why in the HELL do people keep bringing up the racial make-up of Ferguson.

Agreed. All of this focus on the hyphenated make up of whatever: police force, firemen, school, teachers, etc -- is utter nonsense. They try to allocate it by skin color, gender, sexual orientation, etc.
Just stick to what matters: American citizens, and competent (and best qualified if there are multiple applicants) for the job or position.

Bull$h!t. It means getting your marks on an exam raised. It means getting a job that you are not qualified for. It means freedom from prosecution if you attack a White person. It means being held to a lower standard of conduct.

I've asked these questions. I think we all know what the answers are.

WHY do you suppose there are only 4 black officers? Were the tests in cursive? Did any blacks even apply? Were they qualified? Were the standards too high, that is were they racist?

And blah blah blah.
