DOT Proposes Mandating Cars Broadcast Location, Direction and Speed

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the Department of Transportation, published last week an "advanced notice of proposed rulemaking" on "vehicle-to-vehicle communications."

What NHTSA is proposing could begin a transformation in the American transportation system that makes our lives better and freer — or gives government more power over where we go and when.

In announcing its proposed rulemaking, NHTSA is stressing its intention to protect the "privacy" of American drivers.

"This document initiates rulemaking that would propose to create a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, FMVSS No. 150, to require vehicle-to-vehicle communication capability for light vehicles," says NHTSA's dryly-worded notice.

What do vehicle-to-vehicle communications entail?

NHTSA has crafted a nice phrase to describe the information cars would broadcast. It is the "Basic Safety Message."

It's for my own good.
(It can report to Lois Lerner that I was at a Tea Party rally, she'll know what to do))

Like the IRS/ObamaCARE broadcasting health records

Of course with it comes the built-in “Kill Switch” which will stop your car if you go where you’re not supposed to.

Cool. And think of the reduced paperwork burden. All they need is an automated ticket app. Speeding can be remotely detected and fines debited automatically from your checking account. How long do you think it will take to deploy this? 5...4...3...2...1....

The only question is which state will go first. I'd bet on California, Illinois, New York, and New Jersey, in that order.

I knew these a$$hats were going to go there eventually. You’ll receive your speeding infractions and red light camera violations email and they’ll automatically deduct it from your bank account. They won’t have to ask for your banking info because they already have it from you enrolling in Obamacare. This should be a NO go. The idiot liberals will vote yes because want government to controll all aspects of their life. I can’t wait til they’re processed as Soylent Green or have their heads lopped off because they wanted to embrace cultural diversity by allowing Shariah law to be implemented. Their payday is fast approaching...

The amount of times I have heard some say on star is great and yet they go on about their personal lives and Govt is in intrusive

Provided that there is no identifying information, this could be a good idea.

LOL! I thought it was only for getting directions to the closest DQ. I NEVER thought onstar was a good idea(at least for me). If it can get enough data to tell you that the oil needs changed or can unlock the doors remotely, it can shut you down too. Not that you’re doing anything wrong, I just don’t care for the idea of somebody else being able to control “my” equipment. Kinda like the new smart phone app for home security where you can do all the alarming remotely from you phone. The first time I saw the ad for it my immediate thought was, “Well if I can look at my security cameras using this, how long before some enterprising youngster can look at or override it?” Not too long probably.
