". . . 7-shot Spencer Rifle was readily available."

And even after the Civil War modified rifled muskets to be breech loaders instead of going with the Spencer.

If history is any guide someone will decide to use parts from the M4s the have on hand to make basically an M4 that uses the .243 Winchester to save money. Then they'll change powder in the .243 and start another round of modifications to compensate for the powder change.

I have to differ with you on my tweaks on my M14; they weren’t needed to make the rifle work well - all of the M14s worked well and virtually never had any stoppages. My mods were more to make full auto controllable - which was far too fast with an unmodified M14. In regular stock form an M14 always fired, was quite accurate and killed reliably. Generally, if you hit the guy once, he stayed down. You could even kill them behind heavy cover like concrete gravestones thanks to the penetrating power.

The M16 was a weak design with several inherent flaws. Inaccessible chamber, steel joined with aluminum to form built-in anodic corrosion in the hot, wet environment of Vietnam, a lousy caliber for any kind of distance, and poor sights. It was a weapon for people to feel “modern” but lousy to risk your life with. The enemy’s weapons were reliable and functional but luckily not in a noneffective caliber and miserably inaccurate. I’m alive because the bullet that hit me shattered my leg bone but kept going - it was mild steel.

With all of firearms expertise we have in this country, why can’t we develop an infantry weapon system that fills the bill? Instead we have the dimwits at ARDEC pushing the XM-25 monstrosity instead of a decent rifle.

Inchon was an amazing feat of arms. You should be very proud of your father.

100%... the time factor is usually ignored/left out

recoil and acceleration start at the instant of ignition till the round leaves the barrel, deceleration on impact is almost instantaneous in comparison

The quotes on your personal page are fantastic! Quite a collection. Eric Holder would not be pleased.

The last paragraph sums it up:

I believe that the FN SCAR was the winner. However FN presumably didn't complain about the unfair testing because they were just given the M4 contract.

>>> The energy from the round is the same energy is has in recoil minus whatever it loses in flight due to air drag.

I’m sorry, but that is a false statement. It is momentum (mv) not energy (.5mv^2) that is the same in the bullet and the recoil. And it is the bullets muzzle momentum that must be absorbed in the recoil. Lost momentum in flight is absorbed by the air.
