Questions Remain Unanswered 10 Years After Beslan
The Moscow Times ^

The children who set off for their first day of school 10 years ago in the small Caucasus town of Beslan, North Ossetia, will graduate from high school this coming academic year — at least, those who survived will. On Sept. 1, 2004, a group of 32 armed terrorists took as their hostages more than 1,110 people, including schoolchildren, their parents, relatives and teachers. The group demanded that Moscow recognize Chechnya's complete independence and withdraw all Russian forces from the restive republic. The three-day hostage crisis claimed 385 lives, including those of 156 children, and left 700 victims injured. Ten years have passed since the attack — a decade often described as a pivotal period in Russia's recent history. But many of the key questions raised by the tragedy remain unanswered. Questions While it is clear who took the hostages, mystery still shrouds the question of who initiated the storming of the school building and the subsequent bloodbath between the terrorists, government forces and local vigilantes. What is known is that the security forces began to storm the campus after a bomb rigged up by terrorists in the school gym — where the majority of hostages were being held — exploded. Twenty-two seconds later, another explosion followed. The cause of the blasts remains unknown.

When it comes to terrorism against their citizens Russia is no different than the US - it’s an isolated incident ... and nothing is done.

9/11 was one thing but the Beslan Massacre was the spark that made me truly despise Islamist.

No f’ing way!

Not with OUR peaceful muzzies safely in the country and our homegrown ISIS terrorists far away in Syria and Iraq.

And no f’ing way for them to ever sneak through our hermetically sealed borders.

You worry too much.

I put this in the other Beslan thread......

I teach 5th grade. My portable building is right next to a street. Since I cannot carry my 1911 into my classroom, I leave it in my truck which is parked on that street about 20 feet from my door.

I love my 1911. I have other firearms that I like, including a Glock, but I love my 1911. My understanding is that John Moses Browning invented the 1911 to fire his new cartridge, the .45 acp. This cartridge came about because the Army felt that their current sidearm, if I recall correctly (I may not be) was ineffective against drugged up moslem warriors in the Philippines. Long story short, my sweet 1911 was invented to kill moslems.

I think that at least 9 in 10 Russians would find an idea to kill Ukrainians amusing, including whose in armed forces. It is certainly a two-way street as we have seen in Crimea.
For that reason, if there is a war, not insurgency, right now, there are Chechen muslims and Russian far-right from one side and right-wing militias on the other side who play the game mostly.

Russians have always felt killing Ukrainians amusing. It’s been your national pastime for centuries. And you wonder why all your neighbors hate you.....

Very surprised not many more terror incidents against Russia by any number of disgruntled whose families and friends have been murdered by mother Russia.

Agreed - When they murdered those kids I knew all I needed to know about Islam. I was amazed how such a horrific event was so quickly relegated to the back pages.
