San Juan, Sept. 1 - Starting today, the Puerto Rico Reunification with Spain Movement (MRE) is an officially-constituted group after its first assembly was attended by less than 40 people whose common interest is to make the Caribbean island a Spanish province.
"Reunificationists, 116 years ago, the Spanish province of Puerto Rico was invaded and militarily occupied by the United States, causing the separation from the mother country Spain against its will," said José Nieves, the driving force behind this initiative, during the assembly held on Sunday during the long weekend in Puerto Rico and the United States in observance of Labor Day.
As the organization stated today, Nieves defended [the argument] in the founding speech that the "fateful" Treaty of Paris of 1898 "is illegal because there was no representation from the autonomic government of Puerto Rico."
Since then, in his opinion, there have been 116 years of "Americanization" of Puerto Rico, which is currently under a U.S. Commonwealth status, and "historical distortion so we may forget our past."
However, he celebrated those attempts' "having failed, because we are still Puerto Ricans and we still speak Spanish."
"We will not rest until the people of Puerto Rico know their true history and we become the eighteenth autonomous community within the Kingdom of Spain," added the founder of a movement that was born through Facebook, where it now enjoys over 10,700 "Likes".
In concluding a speech in which the cry "Spanish Puerto Rico!" was heard and a debate ensued over what steps must be taken to meet the organization's objectives and what interest the annexation of Puerto Rico may have for Spain, Nieves pointed out: "Mother Spain, open your arms, that your son Puerto Rico will return home!"
anyone flying that stupid PR flag should be rounded up and sent to espana right way if this is what they want.
I consent. Let them reunite. Spain can pick up the annual welfare payments and all the Puerto Ricans in the U.S. can go home or move to Spain.
Yeah, like this is going to happen. I doubt they want to lose Uncle Sugar’s many freebies.
Please let it be so.
And take Sonia Sotomayor with you.
If they attached themselves to Spain, becoming EU, but remained semi-autonomous...
And configured their banking laws similar to Panama to allow some limited banking privacy...
Could be interesting.
As much as those of us with Puerto Rican blood appreciate the Spanish roots, you need to have some misguided romantic/nostalgic notion of Puerto Rico’s days under Spain as this Nieves fellow has. What we call La Madre Patria (”The Mother Country”) was one abusive parent. She enslaved (and ended up exterminating) the island’s Indian population, sent tyrannical governors, and overall kept her last colony in the Americas sick, illiterate, dirt-poor, democracy-challenged, and underdeveloped. That the Crown granted Puerto Rico some autonomy in 1897 was too little too late.
Agreed. I posted this thread with a tongue-in-cheek disposition.

Goodness, I overlooked that part. With only 40 supporters I’m surprised this is even getting in the news.
To be honest, this news item came from a Spanish website. I suppose Spaniards are amused (and even flattered) that a few dozen Puerto Ricans would like the island to return to the mother country.
But then, there are some Americans out there who would like the U.S. to become a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state no less.
Which now begs the question: Has this been reported in the Puerto Rican media?
“Only if New York City goes with them to Spain.”
Hey, if NYC goes, guess the UN goes too! Oh, Happy Days are here again!
As a joke.
That’s what I figured.
So, two losers getting together? What could go more wrong?
Don’t get me wrong. I was born in P.R. and I still feel the I’m Puerto Rican, just like people from Florida feel like Floridians and people from NY feel like New Yorkers.
My allegiance is with the U.S., and I’m an American.
Spain is a loser, and close to 3rd world status, and P.R. is not far behind. So, why double the pain?
But, I’m willing to consider the unification of P.R. and Spain, as long as Puerto Ricans are in charge. But, how do we get the island to move closer to Spain?
Interesting development. Will the ones in New York have to reapply for residency?
EFE is a Spanish news agency. Radio Intereconomia is in Spain. I get the feeling that there’s nothing behind these stories, and Spanish news media just pick them up to amuse their audience.
I don’t know. Maybe New Yorkers will start a movement to reunify with the Netherlands and become New Amsterdam once more.

Then just ask yourself who educated you so incorrectly and why about Spanish America. Maybe such benefits as free education, free medical assistance, high salaries, culture etc. were not acceptable to some. To whom?
How many of these benefits have you enjoyed in your life.
Just think that 500 years ago in your continent they were available, now the world is richer and they are no longer available. Why?
