Washington (AFP) - US President Barack Obama now admits that his decision to play a vacation round of golf immediately after addressing the murder of US journalist James Foley by Islamic State, was a mistake.
"I should have anticipated the optics," Obama said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.
The president said that he had been forced to hold back tears when he spoke privately to the family of Foley, who was beheaded, but added that there was always the prospect of a "jarring" contrast between world events, and his own efforts to carve out a semblance of a normal life through recreation.
And he also admitted that sometimes his own performance in some of the more public rituals of the presidency was lacking.
"Part of this job, is also the theater of it.
"It's not something that always comes naturally to me. But it matters. And I'm mindful of that," Obama said.

His entire political career is one big photo op. What doesn’t come naturally is leadership.
It would be amusing if all of America went golfing on the day of Barak’s or Michelle’s funeral.

Obama saying theatrics are not something he’s good at?
As if. The man has no ability to be genuine. To show empathy, to show genuine emotional response, you need some moral center with which to rely on. Obama doesn’t have that. Which is why he always shows one emotional cadence when be speaks. He simply doesn’t know how normal people should respond so he pretends with what he has.
He will soon learn that he should have anticipated the optics of describing that fiasco as merely a case of not anticipating the optics.
The man is truly an alien to the human race.
Goes to show you once again what he is made of. Someone had to tell him it was bad optics to have fun 3 minutes after telling the nation about a beheading?
Bad optics, bad theater. A normal human being wouldn’t have had to be told.
He regrets the golfing, but not the homosexual acts in the locker room.
Actions speak louder than any words he may mutter in a half hearted meaninglessness speech just before tending to what really matters in your life.
