Shipping activity in the Northern Sea Route, an Arctic passage that can cut transit times by half for vessels traveling between north Europe and Asia, will open late this year, according to the NSR Information Office.
“Due to ice conditions, active transit navigation on NSR starts later this season,” Sergey Balmsov, the head of the NSR Information Office in Murmansk, Russia, said in an e-mail. “We will see more vessels in September and October.”

They better be quick. The melt season is ending in the next week or so and the ice will begin to grow after that.

Another yacht got caught in the ice this season trying to sail the Northwest Passage - that ain’t been open the last two seasons.

Former Vice President Al Gore references computer modeling to suggest that the north polar ice cap may lose virtually all of its ice within the next seven years. “Some of the models suggest that there is a 75 percent chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during some of the summer months, could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years,” says Gore.
Maybe next year, or in about 15 years, or maybe in a 1000 years, depending on what the sun decides to do, but almost certainly, the northwest passage will open up again, or not.
