How come they never take an old idea/airframe and just apply modern techniques to it. I’m talking about a modern version of the A1 Skyraider. Carrier/LPD borne, packs a punch and can take a beating.
Something turbo prop powered, titanium bathtub and a 25 mm mounted in the prop spindle.
Because the military industrial complex follows the Title 10 organizations in R&D and procurement. The services are primarily resourced for high intensity conflict. That means integrated air defense systems (IADs), and no one wants to foot the bill for other projects.
The only organization that would have an interest is the Marine Corps, but they threw their lot in with the F-35 to replace the AV-8B Harriers.
F35 looks impressive but too many moving parts for the vertical take-off mode. The weapon load out in stealth mode is small too.
