New polls show Hagan widening lead

Two polls released Monday show Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan opening up a lead over Republican challenger Thom Tillis.

Raleigh polling firm American Insights, which has Republican ties, had Hagan with a 9 percentage point lead among likely voters, while Elon University Poll gives Hagan a 4-point lead.

The polls are the latest in a string showing Hagan gaining ground in the campaign.

Of likely voters surveyed by American Insights, 43 percent said they would back Hagan, 34 percent said they backed Tillis, the current state House speaker, and 5 percent backed Libertarian Sean Haugh.

"The race has unmistakably shifted towards Sen. Hagan in recent days," said Pearce Godwin, insights director for American Insights, which has Republican ties. "This poll is a continuation and affirmation of the recent trend in her direction. But there is still a lot of time left on the clock, and I would not be surprised if this volatile race shifts back to a jump ball between now and November."

Although the near double-digit lead for Hagan is eye-catching, it's worth noting that the result is still just within the margin or error with regard to likely voters. While the American Insights results confirm a trend seen in other polls, it is still something of an outlier, giving Hagan more of a lead over Tillis than those other polls have shown.

there is a term for choosing an absolute flaming liberal with whom you disagree violently 100% of the time over a semi-conservative that you agree with 80% of the time; that term is “temper tantrum”.

Is Tillis even running? All I see are Hagan ads and promotions. She is getting her face on Facebook and newspapers all the time. I don’t see much at all about the Republican side. Those who know, know Hagan in an Obama clone but no one is saying so. The right is quiet.

And that, in a nutshell, is why we keep losing.

Tillis is running a pathetic campaign. However, Elon University has the worst polling in NC. However what their pollsters lack in reliability and accuracy, they make up for with just sheer quantity. They flood the NC media with these surveys.

Considering the severe limitations under which they worked, the R’s in the House did a good job. Important legislation was passed, only to die in the Senate. We must take the senate with a veto proof majority.

I think we may have to face the possibility that most Americans today really prefer what Team Obama/Team Reid/Team Pelosi have to offer. In other words, it may not be just hyperbole to say that the USA is broken beyond repair.

I really don’t think this is a case of conservatives nursing a grudge against Tillis. He is running a dreadfully ineffective campaign. Tom Tillis is losing all on his own.

Why does it seem that the Republicans just cannot close the deal?

Its hard to close the deal when nobody knows what you’re selling. ;)

I see lots of HAGAN signs but almost no TILLIS signs. Hagan is a complete jerk but Tillis fails to excite anybody except Karl Rove & Co.

Tillis is running a miserable campaign from what I can tell. He can't even excite himself. Plus the Liberals were smart in getting a 3rd Party candidate on the ballot (a Liberaltarian) who is siphoning away votes a conservative Republican would normally get.

Kagan should be 10 points down. Instead, she is winning despite her being a terrible candidate and an even worse Senator.

I hate to say it, but I think NC is screwed again.

Did I really write "Kagan" instead of "Hagan"?

Yes, mistakenly. But then there is not much difference between her and the lightweight 0bamaBot of that name on the SC. Both view the Constitution as just handy toilet paper.

Exactly. Hagan is a complete, blithering moron. The woman can’t string together two cogent sentences. But, she has the good sense to shut up and allow the DSCC and a slew of liberal interest groups to come in and demonize Tillis. Meanwhile, Tillis is running non-stop ads talking about how he used to be a short order cook and how out-of-touch Washington is. It is really one of the least effective examples of political messaging I have ever seen.

I'm sure the pure of heart GOPers can and will go into great detail the many ways Tillis isn't Hagan and vice versa.

However, from the distance I prefer to maintain as a voter, they smell too much alike to me and I'm tired of their big GuvCo socialism and surveillance.

And that's the trouble with voting for the GOP's plans election after election. I don't want to just slow things down and do big GuvCo better than the demonrats.

I want to turn around and go in the opposite direction entirely!

I don’t think it’s true, but I think it’s close.

Tillis is running a horrible campaign, as another poster said.

I could buy the fact that Hagan is doing a little better.

She's been running pretty hard-hitting and effective campaign commercials, continually.

Tillis, on the other hand, is inexplicably taking a low-key approach.

This race was the Republican's to lose, and they're doing an excellent job of it.

You miss the point of a junior Senator. A vote for Hagan is a vote for Harry Reid and Barack Obama. A vote for Tillis is not, period. I don’t like Tillis, but it’s Reid and Obama destroying the country, not Tillis - regardless of “how he smells.”
