Rob Ford diagnosed with rare type of cancer, will be treated with chemotherapy

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer, his doctor said Wednesday.

“It is a difficult and very rare type of tumour,” Dr. Zane Cohen said in Wednesday evening press conference, describing Ford’s cancer as a malignant liposarcoma.

“It’s a fairly aggressive tumour.”

Dr. Cohen said he is “optimistic” that chemotherapy could be successful. There is a tumour in his abdomen and one in his buttocks, the surgeon said.

Dr. Cohen is an expert colorectal surgeon and is leading Ford’s medical team.

Liposarcoma is a tumour that comes from fat cells in deep, soft tissue.

Numerous members of the Ford family visited Mount Sinai Hospital Wednesday, saying little to the media.

Mayor Ford was admitted to hospital last Wednesday after complaining of severe abdominal pain. On Thursday, doctors said a significant mass was found in his abdomen.

“Liposarcoma is a tumour that comes from fat cells in deep, soft tissue.”

Kind of amazing that they were able to find it.

Agreed. I wish him the best, and I’m confident that if he beats this thing his priorities will fall into a healthy order over the chaos he’s been struggling with.

Sarcomas are nasty, plain and simple. Prayers up for Mr. Ford and his family - they will need all the prayers they can get in the coming days.

Good luck to Mr. Ford.

Prognosis: The prognosis varies depending on the site of origin, the type of cancer cell, the tumor size, the depth, and proximity to lymph nodes. Well-differentiated liposarcomas treated with surgery and radiation have a low recurrence rate (about 10%) and rarely metastasize. Five-year survival rates vary from 100% to 56% based on histological subtype. (Wiki)

I appreciate your comment but he brought chaos to Toronto. That really sticks in my craw because it could have easily been an American city overrun by an out-of-control mayor. Plus, I just like Toronto. Good restaurants!

I sincerely hope he recovers.

Very sad..Colon cancer is a horrible disease, now with colonoscopies you can find them early. My Dad died of the disease in 1998 so I know how hard this disease is on the family. Prayers sent

Certainly his very own style of chaos. The worse thing in life is to leave this earth with nothing to be told of you. He certainly has that problem beat!

With him on chemo and all those fine restaraunts, think of all the extra food for the rest of you!

The “chemo” diet is not one I would recommend for weight loss.

Good luck to his family and him.

The word "Chutzpah" should be followed by a picture of Rob Ford. He is such a compounded product of good and bad ingredients. He certainly does not lack style.

There is no such thing as bad press.

I thought that there was a waiting line in Canada for much of the cancer treatments that caused many to come to the US for treatment. I hope Mr. Ford recovers for the sake of his family, but I also hope he isn't getting any special privileges.

There is a wait, but cases are prioritized based on urgency. I have a form of skin cancer that is slow-growing and normally benign so my wait is about 10-12 weeks from diagnosis to surgery. Ford will be starting his chemo within 48 hours, which again is normal for cases like his.
