Poland kicks off major military exercises involving eight NATO partners on Wednesday amid the West's worst standoff with Russia since the end of the Cold War sparked by differences over the Ukraine crisis.
Organised every two years since 2006, this year's Anaconda manoeuvres involve 12,500 soldiers, with 750 from NATO members the US and Britain among others, the Polish defence ministry said, adding the event "has become a permanent training element of the North Atlantic alliance".
The exercises are designed to coordinate cooperation with NATO's rapid reaction forces, created at the alliance's Cardiff summit earlier this month.
They also come as the US State Department approved this week the possible sale to Poland of air-to-surface missiles as part of plans to equip and upgrade Warsaw's fleet of F-16s.
Poland has earmarked 33.6 billion euros ($43 billion) to upgrade its military equipment over 10 years, including acquiring a missile shield, armoured personnel carriers, submarines and drones.
Amid the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski proposed raising defence spending to 2.0 percent of GDP, from the current 1.95 percent.
Poland, a former Soviet satellite state with a population of 38 million, joined NATO in 1999 a decade after shedding communism.

Do you realize that some 10000 US servicemen were convicted for sexual assaults against French women, who weren’t even an enemy?
As for a Germans vs Russians their estimates are inflated. In 1945 Germany still had a racist law prescribing aborting for an ‘ethnic purity’ reasons. Any woman who wanted an abortion (and there were many because a few could afford even to feed themselves) simply went to the doctors claiming pregnancy as a result of rape by the Soviet soldier of Tatar or Chinese ethnicity. Problem solved and here we got fake records. I’m not saying that rapes didn’t happened at all but it not a unique problem related to the Soviets. war is war.

Unless you are a filthy Russkie proagandist, in which case, 10,000 rapes committed by Americans in WWII is equivalent to 2 million rapes by Russian soldiers (other estimates, 15 million), and the rapes, kidnappings, torture, and mass murder, committed by Russian today against the "eeeevil Nazi Ukrainian Junta."
I have just explained you where they got their 2000000 inflated number. And of course you may not be that gullible to suppose that 10000 convicted rapists does mean 10000 actual rapes. Even in peace time only one in ten assaults are prosecuted.

She said violence happened but it was nowhere near prevalent and actually never supported by either fellow soldiers and command. If a victim was serious about prosecuting a perp it has usually ended with the fire squad for rapist. I think I can trust her because she is kind an impartial due to her gender. She said prostitution was a bigger problem. There was little to none to eat and German women could offer themselves to a can of beans.
The Russkies weren't just raping Germans. But other Russians, Poles, anyone they could get their hands on, from young to old. And not just "women," as in adults, but children on up to grandmas.

We have testimony from survivors, including stories of Russians gathering groups of women, raping each one of them, cutting off breasts, raping them with bottles, sticks, whatever, when too drunk to continue. And all of this watched over by your commanders and ordered by them. Your country also protects and refuses to extradite gulag guards who are serial rapists, torturers and mass murderers, and calls them "honorable veterans."
This is not a matter of debate. These are facts of history. It is only in your communist country where the crimes of the Soviet Union, especially in WWII, are whitewashed.
