President Obama salutes Marines at base of Marine One with coffee cup in his hand

President Barack Obama returned a formal military salute with a one-handed coffee-cup salute Tuesday, only a few hours after he dispatched the nation’s military on their attack mission into northern Syria.

White House aides posted the sloppy salute video on Instagram. The commander in chief offered the coffee-cup salute when he disembarked from his U.S. Marine Corps helicopter in New York, as he made his way to the United Nations General Assembly.

“President Obama just landed in New York for #UNGA2014,” says the caption. The salute is “the most important of all military courtesies,” says a manual for Marine Corps officer candidates.

“In some situations, the salute is not appropriate,” says the manual. “In general, do not salute when… carrying articles with both hands or being otherwise so occupied as to make saluting impractical,” says the manual, titled “Customs and Courtesies.”

Some of the comments on the Instagram account were very critical of Obama’s unconventional salutation.

Well, his other hand was empty.

He acts like a slow witted foreigner who was raised in an entirely different culture and has at best only a shallow understanding of American traditions and customs.

Oh, wait.

It’s not an act, is it?

And he’s left handed. If I were carrying a cup of coffee, and I was left handed, it’d be in my left hand, not my right.

Almost seems intentional.

No surprise, coming from the WORST president in American history. Not only is he the worst, he truly hates the USA, which gave him a free ride all his life.

DITTO

It makes you wonder ... if “O” cannot comprehend the significance of THIS then what the f^%$ does he GET about the rest of his duties in being President of the United States of America.

Anyone with a gram of integrity would look forward to the HONOR of being saluted by THESE men and the opportunity to salute IN RETURN!

Instead, they seem to be an annoying inconvenience to him because he has something more pressing to do.

Really??

Is that different than this? If so how? Just curious what you all think.

I would say the difference is that it appears that President Bush attempted a proper salute but got caught short handed and tied up in the leash, while the salute from Obama looked as though he just didn’t care.

In the case you show, the President by standards should have not saluted at all because both of his hands are being used. However, I think the reason he did salute was because of a little ignorance on his part and also because of the respect that he has for the military. Someone saluted him and he felt obligated out of the respect he has to salute him back.

Obama's left hand has nothing in it. He could have simply shifted the coffee cup to his left hand and returned the salute. But he doesn't care and can't be bothered....

By the way, the proper thing to do when both hands are occupied is to not salute and acknowledge the saluter usually by a head gesture in the affirmative.

That’s interesting since he is left handed.

Same phenomenon seen by millions of parents who somehow think its helpful to give their worthless kids a lifetime freeride.

You sound like me. I can’t stand to look at him, listen to his voice or hear anything he’s got to say. The hubster wants to hear him, only because he thinks you should keep tabs on the enemy. I told him you can go right ahead with that and keep me posted, but when he comes on the TV I leave the room. It’s really, really irritating and galling to me.

You know when he and Moo saw this on tv she probably said, “All this over a d*** marine.” And the msm wonder why the SS let the fence jumper get into the WH before nabbing him.

Of course, he doesn’t get any of it as witnessed these last 6 years by his handlers’ having to constantly explain away and reinvent what he says and does.

A huge difference. W had the dog in both hands and as you can plainly see, the read leash and the dogs upended leg prevented him from saluting properly, and he’s holding a second black strap or leash. Don’t try to start something you can’t win.
