Mt. Ontake in central Japan erupts

Japan's Meteorological Agency is warning people to stay away from Mount Ontake in central Japan following a volcanic eruption.

The agency said the volcano on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures erupted shortly before noon on Saturday.

Video taken by an NHK helicopter shows the volcano spewing gray smoke up into the sky.

The agency upgraded its 5-stage volcanic alert level to 3 -- which urges people not to approach the mountain.

Firefighters say about 200 climbers have taken shelter at a cottage near the top. They say a few people are reportedly injured.

Mount Ontake last erupted 7 years ago. An eruption in 1979 damaged farm crops.

This mountain is very popular with hikers. A report from a different source said those 100-200 hikers are, in fact, trapped. On the volcano.

I’m flying to Nagoya tomorrow, and in Suzuka for the next week and a half. talked to a coworker already out there and it’s only affecting about a 10 square mile area, not anything like Iceland or Mt St Helens was.

Some people believe solar activity can cause earthquakes and volcano eruptions, due to the changes in surface pressure the Sun's CMEs put on our Earth's "MAGNETOSPHERE".
They believe this pressure can push all the way down to the earth's surface, and, over a large area, half the surface of the globe, might cause the magma and the earth's continental plates to move, bow, and/or bend;
thus causing earthquakes and, in some cases, volcano eruptions.

Check this out.
