I lived in a druggie part of town and loved garage sales, you should have seen the collection of scales, including the very expensive scales, that I had.

I quit collecting them because I lived 70 feet from the ocean and they all were rusting, but that community had scales like you wouldn’t believe.

The one in that photo is just a run of the mill postal scale.

I didn’t remember, but when I recently loaded an old, early XP disc onto a desktop, I saw how crude and primitive it was, going from the original to Service Pack 3 and years of updates was a total transformation.

It wasn't really usable until SP2. I remember vividly the screams about it. SP3 helped as well, but also introduced the 'validation' crap.

I would love to move from Windows 8 that was on my new computer to hopefully-——something better.

Windows 8 is a bummer.

Upgrade to Windows 7.

I recently put an old hard drive into an old computer and loaded XP off of an old disc (all from different finds), and somehow I got past the verification process, by paying close attention.

I bought a bundled AMD A7700k APU with a Gigabyte mobo for $130 from Microcenter. The CPU alone is $130 on Newegg, and more for the A7580k, which I would’ve preferred. Also bought a 64 SSD for 2 games, and recently bought an aftermarket heatsink because I was having overheating problems. All of this didn’t cost much.

That makes me happy. I have an 8 laptop, but I really don’t like Windows 8.

Yeah, it’s aggravating enough I’ll go ahead and add the program.
Burns me up that there was no way to stop that bottom right activation.

‘Search’ for it. You’ll find more talented cursers than I to describe it.

Good stuff. And I will say that “horror stories” is probably a bit harsh.

Vista sure had its problems at the start and I’d consider that a much harder transition (mainly from people that I consider trustworthy). I used Vista a little bit but not much (it was on a laptop that I got loaned by my job to travel with).

By the time the towers at my job were upgraded, they went to Win7. Seems to me that Win7 is essentially Vista with the bugs worked out. I may be wrong but that’s my perception. With Win7 on my work computer and home computer, I’m not anxious to upgrade. I’m liking Win7 just fine.

I’d have kept 7 if I could have. I like it better than 8.1 for some oddities - like with 8.1, you cannot make a system repair disc. You must use a USB drive and it can only hold the restore files. What was the point of that?

And 8.1 requires you to log on with a MS ID & password. Why? How many people REALLY wanted to log on to their computer with an ID held at Microsoft?

“Why would someone not have already upgraded to 8.1 from 8?”

Because that “upgrade” failed on a large percentage of PCs.

There are different reasons, such as a device that does not have a working driver for it, or some apps that are not updated. Search Your Windows 8.1 Install Couldn’t be Completed ...

Heh, I’m sure that the value of free is hard to beat. What I am worried about is that it is not worth the upgrade from 7 to 8. Not for me, but maybe for others...
