U.S. doctor visits N. Korea to treat leader Kim's aunt: source

SEOUL, Oct. 2 (Yonhap) -- A Korean-American cardiologist arrived in North Korea last month to treat the aunt of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a source familiar with affairs inside the communist state said Thursday, prompting speculation about the state of her health.

Kim Kyong-hui, the current leader's aunt and younger sister of late former leader Kim Jong-il, has been known to have a heart disease, but the doctor's alleged visit could be an indication that she has fallen into critical condition.

"An American cardiologist arrived in Pyongyang around Sept. 28 to treat former secretary Kim Kyong-hui," the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The 68-year-old aunt served as a senior secretary of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party before she was apparently removed from the country's power elite following last December's execution of her once powerful husband, Jang Song-thaek, on charges of treason.

It is unclear whether the doctor is still in Pyongyang or has returned to the United States, the source said.

The source also denied speculation that the doctor's visit could be linked to recent reports that the young North Korean leader is suffering from gout.

They say Kim has been out of sight for quite a while now. I’ll bet anything his heart is acting up.

He certainly doesn’t look like he takes care of it.

Maybe we’ll be treated to the spectacle of mass weeping and wailing as Koreans sob over their “dear leader”.

Gout? I have it. When I have a painful attack, and can hardly walk, I chomp a lot of dried sour red cherries, and drink pure sour red cherrie juice. Attack over in less than two days. Luckily, it seldom bothers me. If he has it, I hope it hurts like Hell!

My, the timing of this is really amazing. Chia Jr. certainly must have some cardiac issues if previous reports of elevated blood lipid panels are accurate. It strikes me as quite odd that Jr. would “off” his aunt’s husband yet bring a heart doctor from the US, no less, for his aunt, and “oh by the way, doc, would you mind giving me a consult since you are already here”?

On the other hand, maybe Jr. is out of the country on a visit to China or Russia or is under house arrest and his aunt’s heart problems provide a convenient cover.

Interesting to speculate.

Indeed. "doc, I got this friend who has this discharge ... what should I tell him to do?"

Is this aunt's husband the uncle whom Kim fed to the dogs alive?

You are right about the cherry juice. When I get an attack my heel hurts to look at it. The cherry juice clears it up quickly. Why? Who cares?

“Why? Who cares?”

Why? Cuz dear leader has gout. Don’t tell him about cherries, tell him to eat hundreds of dried prunes instead!

Yes, except Uncle Jang was machine gunned to death. The “fed to the dogs” bit was just rumor based upon Kim’s raging comment about his Uncle being lower than dogs (reportedly).
