NRSC Chairman Jerry Moran: Republican donors ‘skeptical’ after Romney loss
washingtonpost.com ^ | 10/2/14 | Sean Sullivan

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Jerry Moran (Kan.) said Thursday that lingering disappointment over the outcome of recent elections has made it harder for Republicans to raise money in their pursuit of the Senate majority.

"When I started the attempt to raise money for our candidates -- or for races even before we had candidates -- it was hard to get Republican donors to get out the checkbook," said Moran. "They had been through election cycles before in which we didn't have the success that people thought we should and Governor Romney did not get elected president."

Moran made his comments an in an interview with The Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and C-SPAN on "Newsmakers," which will air Sunday. Despite President Obama's unpopularity and Republican momentum in the battle for the Senate, GOP donors are "skeptical about one more time opening their checkbook," Moran said.

Through August, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee outraised the NRSC $111 million to $81 million for the election cycle, thanks in large part to Obama, who headlined eight fundraisers for Senate Democrats during the first eight months of the year. Democratic super PACs have outraised their GOP counterparts in recent months.

No, maybe donors are skeptical because ALL of the NRSC endorsed candidates in 2012 went down in flames.

Hoekstra in MI, Mack in FL, Allen in VA, Berg in ND, Wilson in NM, Rehberg in MT and Thompson in WI.

And also because conservatives are SICK of the NRSC endorsing types like Arlen Specter, Charlie Crist and Lincoln Chafee, while trying to push Jim Bunning out the door!

If you don’t believe in anything, belittle your base and can’t win, then you don’t get money, Jerry.

And why wouldn’t they be?

The Dems got away with creating this fake phony pantomime Romney who abused dogs, confiscated birth control and gave people cancer. And they ran against that Romney. And Romney just sat back and let them do it.

Thad Cochran and that loser in Kansas are two big reasons I hang up when I get called.

In the comments to that article helmsconservative writes

Senator Jerry Moron does indeed need a primary, and badly. But conservatives should beware that Thom Tillis of NC has stated his main goal if he gets to DC is to chair the NRSC, and Tillis' history in the NC General Assembly is of trying to oust conservative legislators and he is far more viciously anti-conservative than anyone we have seen so far at NRSC.

Defund the NRSC. Remember Mississippi!

Remember Mississippi, indeed.

Ha, ha, ha........ I think he is getting the message.

After a hiatus of several years I am getting letters again. The letters don’t include my plastic official membership card but a reminder that my memberships has lapsed but please send money.

Speaking of Mississippi, wasn’t there a hearing in the Mississippi Supreme Court concerning the primary on October 2?

Oh, you should see my email. I’ve been receivng hundreds of emails from all over the place (but they’re all from the NRSC). They try to be tricky by sending them from Tim Scott, etc. but at the bottom they all say, “Paid for by Romney for President.”

I’ve been putting them all in my spam but they just keep coming under different names. They are VERY desperate for funds! Well that’s what you get when you blow millions to “crush” any conservative opposition.

Well, duh, Jerry.

I haven’t given anything to the national committees since the ‘98 election when the repub’s went back on almost everything that got them the majorities in ‘94. Been contributing to individual candidates ever since.

They got no game.

In China, you or your family must pay for the bullet they use to execute you. There seems to be a strange parallel if you contribute to any Republican organ. The money they blew killing you they are now begging you give back.

The GOPe will run a RINO. That’s a given.

So it’s much better if they run three: Mitt, Chris, and Jeb.

Divide RINO money and votes for a change.

Let us unite behind a single candidate (Cruz) early.

That’s what I’m praying for.

I’m afraid we may see a repeat of 2012. By all reckoning, Obama should have been defeated. I think that led all of the Republican candidates to believe that all they had to do was win the nomination and the general election would be guaranteed. Too many of them stayed in the contest certain that it would make them president if only they could win. The problem is they stayed when they should have gracefully bowed out and supported another candidate.

Just because someone is a conservative does mean they are immune from the sin of pride.

You’re right up to the point about Jim Bunning. I loved Jim Bunning, but he was becoming senile and risked our losing a GOP seat in 2010 when he was pushing 80 (older than Pat Roberts is now).

RINOs are not an opposition party to the left. They are the left. So donating to them promotes liberalism not conservatism.

“You’re right up to the point about Jim Bunning. I loved Jim Bunning, but he was becoming senile and risked our losing a GOP seat in 2010 when he was pushing 80 (older than Pat Roberts is now).”

My point was that the Establishment had NO PROBLEM looking around for a replacement for Bunning, but in the same year, they endorsed Arlen Specter. They supported Ted Stevens, who was about to be indicted. These two were also pushing 80, as was Richard Lugar. And Thad Cochran is clearly approaching senility.

Bunning was a trouble-maker, who objected to unanimous consents and didn’t do what McConnell said, so he had to go. But Specter, who HARDLY EVER voted with the republican leadership, why he was just fine, let’s support him one more time. They’re very selective.

The US Senate should not be choosing its own members and the NRSC should not be picking and choosing. They should let the people decide who their nominee will be, then get behind him or her.

That’s not how it works, of course. They let Buck and O’Donnell and Angle twist in the wind while lots of funds went to Murkowski and Crist and Castle.

I understand what you were saying and I mostly agree. Just that in the handful of instances where it’s time for one of ours to hang it up (as it was with Bunning), we have to be firm with them, too. Dumping the others go without saying, and age is only a small part of the equation. Being big government statists is the central problem.
