NBC Chicago ^ | October 3, 2014

The Dallas Hospital that sent Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan home said a software flaw, and not human error, caused doctors to miss the diagnosis, NBC News is reporting. The electronic health records (EHR) system that the hospital uses has a separate workflow for physicians and nurses. The travel history of the patient was located in the nursing portion of the workflow within the EHR, but not in the physician's workflow.

More like incompetence. When he said “Liberia” he should have been isolated.

Horrifying, and not the least bit surprising. Most hospitals are spending obscene amounts to reach the meaningful use targets and then having to lay off caregivers.

The doctor probably never saw the man. Big city ERs have docs there for trauma cases. If you’re lucky you’ll get a nurse or a nurse’s assistant to have the wax taken out of your ear or to get antibiotics for your sinus infection.

This guy had flu symptoms and he was given antibiotics???? LOL

Texas Hospital Blames ...
The overwhelming lack of responsibility in this country, from the inner city 'rats all the way up to the WH, is just staggering. How America continues to operate is beyond me.

Hmm. A software flaw. Who designed the software? Who approved the software? Who purchased the software?

Oh, yes, a computer did all that.

Fools.

Bull excrement. It was not a “software flaw”, it was human error.

That’s the truth about this hospital.

I don’t belive a word from this hospital or the CDC.

If one wants to look at what happens when SHTF on a small scale,
this case is a prime example.

Imagine what 1000 cases would look like.

That was my first impression too.

Wouldn’t the nurse have excused her(him)self and made a PHONE CALL ASAP, before trying to enter something in the computer?

I sure as hell would, a guy from Africa sitting near me with ebola-like symptoms?

I’d a had someone in there PRONTO to take his sick azz away from me

Behind every computer is a human error. Program, data, or procedures all human controlled.

Get used to this.

The medical run-around has been around for a while and it’s only gotten worse in the last 18 months or so.

You will not get a consistent answer from medical people unless you are prepared to drill down and pester many different people ... call, call, call and generally spend many hours tracking things down on your own.

Computer records my @ss. They do not look at those and they are not cross referenced with anyone else. In fact, just try to get your records from one doctor sent ‘electronically’ to another doctor who may need your history to make a medical decision. Not going to happen automatically if at all and only then if you get the records and hand carry them to the other doctor.

Anyone that doesn’t have the time or the organizational skills to manage their health records is SOL because ‘the system’ is not going to do it.

This story is Exhibit A.

To be fair, this stuff has been going on well before Obamacare. It’s only going to get worse however with the cluster __ that is Obamacare.

if a very black man with a very heavy foreign accent comes in sick and does not have a SS #

That is not a rare or unusual description.
