CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) A federal law enforcement-issued gun and badge are just a couple of the items that have been recently found underneath the receding waters of drought-dry Castaic Lake.
A Castaic man fishing on the dam at Castaic Lake found a backpack that had been exposed as the water line has gone down 151 feet, Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department officials said. The bag contained a gun and a badge issued to an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
The ATF agent, who was not identified, said that he and a friend from the Los Angeles County Probation went to Castaic Lake in 1992 to enjoy a day on the lake. The duo decided to put their valuables in a backpack they took on the boat instead of leaving it in the soft-top Jeep they had driven, officials said.

At some point, the boat was swamped and the backpack, containing a gun, badge, pager, watch, what appears to be a class ring and a credit card-size calendar, went over the side and into the lake.
The officers told sheriffs officials they got a lot of grief from their peers about losing their badges and weapon in the lake but were glad the items have been found and their story was validated.
Castaic Lakes water level continues to drop because of the drought, revealing items like the backpack, an outboard motor and a GoPro camera, officials said.
Smith and Wesson model 39’ I believe... LOVE that gun!
Well, they should be able to figure out who the agent was.
In very close proximity to that lake is an area known as Val Verde. Back in the day (20-25 years ago) it was a hotbed for illegals and mexican gangs. It was pretty well known back then if you were of the pale persuasion, you stayed out of Val Verde. I don’t know what it is like today however.
Now find the cement blocks
A little bit of reading tells the story. The agent is alive and well.
Wow, he really did lose it in a boating accident.
See? Weapons REALLY can get lost in boating accidents!
LOL! Who knew? B^)
Gentlemen, we now have confirmed precedent of firearms being lost in boating accidents.
Probably a model 59. The 39 had a bad reputation for malfunctioning.
Jimmy Hoffa is still down there.
That’s not an ATF badge. ATF ceased to be part of the Treasury Dept. when DHS was created back in 2002, and ATF was put under the DOJ.
There remains a section within Treasury for collection of federal taxes on alcohol and tobacco, known as Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.
I have the 59, lots more action.
Oh, okay, I just re-read the story and realized that the boating incident happened in 1992, so it makes sense now.
I never could figure that, my mdl59 will digest anything. The mdl39 uses an identical slide and shares a lot of other stuff.
I bought a model 22-A maybe a year ago. It was actually built without an extractor!
I shot it several times before it jammed even without an extractor. I will say their service was excellent. I had it back within 10 days this time with an extractor.
It has never failed since and is pretty accurate too.
Spray a little WD-40 on it and it will be good as new!;-D
