State Police have arrested a 10-year-old boy and charged him as an adult in the beating death of a 90-year-old woman in Wayne County, Pennsylvania.

Authorities say the boy was visiting his grandfather, the woman's caretaker, on Saturday when the woman shouted at the child for entering her room. They say he punched her in the throat numerous times.

I agree. And there reasons for why younger children are doing these sorts of things, like the girls did who acted out a murderous tale on a classmate. Children these days are exposed to moral mayhem in all sorts of ways. It’s almost completely up to the adults (very often not their parents) in their lives to preserve as much of their childhood innocence as possible while trying to guide them correctly. Then also, in many cases, antidepressants are given to troubled children already fed all sorts of mixed-up ideas and result in horrendous crimes, but the drug link is completely covered up.

A juvenile cannot be charged with homiciide in PA. Homicide implies intent and a real juvenile is not considered capable of intentionally taking the life of anyone. So, when intent is clear, they charge as an adult.

Finally, a picture.

I figured that since they didn’t trumpet “white” in the article, as they usually do, that might indicate something.

“It’s unreasonable to suspect a child will kill a grandparent unless the DA can clearly establish that there was a prior threat.”

I agree, but this woman wasn’t his grandparent. He wasn’t related to this woman, and he was only there because his grandfather was the caretaker of this woman. If the grandfather was employed to take care of this woman he had a responsibility to ‘take care of her’.

Whether or not it was reasonable for him to leave this child alone with her is dependent upon other things - like whether or not this child had a history of aggression or mental health issues. From a different post: “If a 10 year old kills someone with a cane and his fists, because she yelled at him, it is likely that his aggressive behavior has shown up before.”

The first thing the boy needs is a blood test and CAT scan.

Unless either of those is extremely weird, like a brain tumor or some organic problem that “would bend any pipe”, the next visit would be to an organic psychiatrist.

They can pretty easily determine if he is an extreme psychopath who “no how” can ever be released because he is a homicide machine, or has some other juvenile mental illness that also means a long term stay for the rest of his life.

If he makes it through that, and good odds for that, then he should be turned over to the justice system.

Yeah, it’s perfectly okay for a ten year old that is unarmed to kill someone.

Thanks — I had incorrectly assumed that she was the wife of the grandfather, thinking the “caretaker” designation referred to a husband who was still well enough.

Something else to keep in mind is that since the 1950’s, teen suicide has tripled and there are even considerable numbers of pre-teen children attempting to or actually killing themselves. A government report I read identified divorce as the number one factor. Today’s “ethics” are that ability to voice your needs and wants gives you rights. Children lack that ability, so they often only receive “the leftovers” from their “caregivers.” Suicide and murder certainly aren’t the same, but in children especially can result from many of the same causes.

stealing a cookie isn’t a felony b/c it’s dollar amt is too low.

kids know what murder is. it’s the one crime i think should have no distinction btwn juvenile or adult. another person’s life was ended deliberately, savagely and prematurely, without mercy.

nobody’s disappointed here at all.

generally speaking it’s the proper guess not knowing details.

i want thugs, young or old of whatever color and unbringing, put down. sooner the better, save society decades of murders and prison costs.

I hope this monster is sick or mentally ill. I hate to think 10yr old kids are killing people now. Has society really gotten to this point?

This boy is likely beyond rehabilitation.
He seemingly has a taste for blood and it is difficult to envision how an individual like this could be trusted again.

Thinking back decades to when I was 10 years old the notion of respect for elders superseded virtually all other considerations.
The notion of striking an innocent person would have not even entered my youthful mind.
What an unfortunate news story and how sadly tragic for the 90 year old victim.
