Sad news via Radio Iowa regarding the passing of Libertarian Party Senate candidate Douglas Butzier:
The pilot who died in a plane crash near Dubuque late last night was the Libertarian candidate for Iowas U.S. Senate seat.
The family of Douglas Butzier has confirmed Butzier was piloting the plane that crashed near the Dubuque Regional Airport at about 11 p.m. Monday. No one else was in the plane.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the single-engine plane took off from the Ankeny Regional Airport at about 10 p.m. and crashed at about 11 p.m., about a mile north of the runway in Dubuque. Butzier, who was an ER doctor, was born in Mount Pleasant and grew up in Cedar Falls. Butzier, who was 59 years old, has been working at Dubuque Mercy Hospital for the past 17 years.
Ok, thank-you.
In 1972 Hale Boggs, House majority leader, and Nick Begich, Democrat Congressman from Alaska, were killed in a plane crash. Begich’s son is the current senator who is running for re-election this year (who won the first time because of bogus charges against Ted Stevens, who later died in a plane crash after leaving office).
How very sad. My prayers for his family..
First Buddy Holly then Douglas Butzier. There’s a Iowa conspiracy to be investigated...
I’m not an instructor but I’ve seen the same thing a lot. That whole thing about watching the altimeter just blows by a lot of folks. Something about not really being able to live/function well in three dimensions it seems. I like to ask people how well they did in geometry before I trust them with powerful machinery.
He was waved off on his first attempt. The elevation at the departing airport is approx. 400 ft. lower than at the Dubuque field. I won’t speculate, the FAA investigation will figure out what happened. Tragic loss for his family, friends and colleagues.
Read it again. That’s like Demoines to Dubuque.
I don’t get the joke, but JFK jr. was flying to Martha’s Vineyard so it make no sense.
As to other commnets in JFK jr., He was a rookie flyer having recently gotten his license. I would presume this doctor being 59 was along time flyer.
Howdy,R
The loss of 2 daughters would devastate me.
The Kennedy men were all arrogant snobs performing their Champion of the Working Class schtick.
Say hello to S.

A mile north an hour later? Wonder what he was doing....
Ankeny and Dubuque are two differnt airports (presumably about an hour away from each other).
Captain Obvious! lol
Don't forget Rocky!!
When not to fly:
These folks were in a hurry to get to Florida and tried to beat out a really impressive roll cloud associated with an arriving front. We were headed into Champaign for church from the west & I would have stopped along the freeway and taken its picture if I would have remembered my camera. Maybe he didn’t know that the wind from the downdraft is not visible and arrives before the cloud.
“Buerkett, an instrument-rated pilot with 20 years’ experience, was piloting his single-engine Piper PA 46 Mirage. Upon takeoff from its home base at Rantoul Airport, about 125 miles southwest of Chicago, the plane ran into wind shear.
An eyewitness said the tail flipped up and the aircraft began to plummet nose-first, then struck a power line. Upon hitting the ground, the plane burst into flames, leaving wreckage strewn about the crash site.
Local officials said high winds and rain had suddenly moved into the area. Friends described Buerkett as a cautious and meticulous pilot who would not knowingly fly in severe weather. An eyewitness said Buerkett was attempting to depart before the weather system arrived but rain had just started at about the time of takeoff.”

Flying in such conditions can be very challenging. If one doesn't make nearly-constant small corrections as to altitude and course-over-the-ground, corrections can seem to get necessarily larger. The pilot can "get behind" on the tasks required for safe flight. Then, look out!
Conceivably, there may have been a so-called microburst which could force a plane quickly downward several hundred feet, causing the contact with the ground. Apparently, Butzier was for some reason unable to correct that and compensate in time.
It's also conceivable he was tempted to go too low, below the safer limits allowed for the instrument approach he was assigned, looking for openings in the clouds that may not actually have allowed him to sneak into the airport, before the rising terrain "ruined his day".

150 miles apart.
JFK jr went into the drink just short of Martha’s VIneyard, so over time, he’ “wash up” on Martha’s VIneyard, an island.
JFK, Jr., killed two other people besides himself by his foolhardiness.

First thing I thought of too. Flying IFR and didn’t adjust altimeter for destination.
I had three aunts who lived on Martha’s Vineyard.
They arrived around 1920.
It was a different kind of place in those years.
