CLEVELAND - Officials with the Centers for Disease Control say the nurse who contracted the Ebola virus may have shown symptoms earlier than first believed.

During a press conference in Summit County on Thursday, the CDC says Amber Vinson may have experienced symptoms on Friday, the day she flew from Dallas, Texas to Cleveland.

Dr. Chris Braden with the CDC says they can “not rule out” that Vinson had symptoms on Oct. 10 and that now the passengers on the flight from Dallas to Cleveland will be “included in the investigation."

It is beginning to look like the most difficult problem with this situation, is that people will just lie about their condition.

The first guy, who died, lied about not having been in contact with someone who had ebola. He did. The woman lied about her symptoms. I don't know what we can do when people will lie about what is going on with them, even if it ends up sickening, or perhaps, killing some innocent person.

Here’s my question. The nurses who cared for Duncan all know each other. If I’d been Pham the minute my temp spiked I’m calling every one of them. ( we don’t know that she did or didn’t do this)

This was NOT an abstract medical theory to these women- they had watched and cared for Duncan while he was dying. After seeing this and by then maybe doing some research herself- what possessed her to hop on a plane to Ohio??

I agree, she is just as responsible for her actions as the guy from Africa, and we know what that caused.

Pham evidently did what she was supposed to do. Stayed self-quarantined and called immediately when she detected a fever.

The second nurse, Vinson, did not. She jumped on a plane.

Good question.

FYI ... three relatives employed at KSU.

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2014/10/15/ebola-victim.html

Her mother and stepfather have voluntarily quarantined themselves, he said. For most others who came into contact with the woman, the department likely will recommend self-monitoring.

Vinson, a 2003 graduate of Akron’s Firestone High School and 2006 and 2008 graduate of Kent State University, is related to three Kent State employees, and the university notified its campus about that relationship today. Her mother, Debra Berry, is the senior assistant to the Kent State president.

Kent State said it had asked the three to stay off campus for 21 days “out of an abundance of caution.”

AALANA Initiatives:

The United States is rapidly becoming a more racially and ethnically diverse nation. In 2010, the Census Bureau noted that blacks (12.6 percent), Hispanics (16.4 percent), and Native Americans (.9 percent) comprise 29.9 percent of the United States population. Further, the Census Bureau projects that by 2050, non-Hispanic whites will constitute less than 53 percent of the American population while minorities will constitute more than 47 percent. Conversely, when the representation of blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans pursuing advanced degrees is compared to the census data, it is clear that the representation of these racial and ethnic groups is considerably low in comparison to their peers. DEI is leading several universitywide initiatives are underway to address these challenges:

Diversity Scorecard: To close the disparity gap, the diversity scorecard process was developed as an approach to provide evidence-based attentiveness for the university stakeholders regarding race-based inequities among underrepresented students, faculty and staff.
Diversifying and Retaining Faculty Training: A targeted training is offered by the Division focused on supporting faculty and Colleges to diversify their recruitment pools and better support the success of AALANA faculty that are hired.
AALANA recruitment efforts: Each year top leadership attend the Southern Regional Education Board Institute for Teaching and Mentoring, a national conference supporting diverse doctoral scholars interested in pursuing faculty positions. The conference generates hundreds of diverse candidates that are incorporated into our institutional AALANA database. The database serves as a resource for departments and colleges to recruit a diverse pool of candidates for potential faculty positions.
AALANA Faculty Support: Each year DEI hosts an annual AALANA faculty workshop and learning community. The workshop provides tools and support for AALANA faculty research, teaching, and advancement. The learning community extends these workshops into a year-long series of workshops, led by our Faculty Associates. Kent State is also an institutional member of the National Faculty for Faculty Development and Diversity.
Coordinated AALANA student support to include various programs and initiatives such as the Male Empowerment Network, Sister Circle, Oscar Ritchie Scholars Guild, Kupita Transciones first-year orientation program, and the Academic STARS program.

Good question because it was reported that she felt unwell when she called. When I am feeling under the weather, I will pop a Tylenol or an Advil for those aches.

I also am curious what her temp was upon landing. I seem to remember reading that Duncan’s fever spiked to 103 F while he was in the emergency room— the first time. Fevers can spike quickly. How sick was she when she arrived at the ED?

This is such a mess. But, yeah. We are the USA! We can handle an Ebola patient in any hospital. Arrrrrgh!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I cannot fathom the level of selfishness this woman has displayed.

The total lack of concern by all the parties in this shocks and angers me.

The nurse was being criminally negligent in flying. The CDC was just as negligent in handling the calls in (Hey I was exposed to Ebola and have a fever should I fly? Go right ahead!).

The hospital in Texas was being incredibly stupid in the PPE requirements, and may be criminally liable also.

But to top it off, the Fedgov seems to think that this is a case of the sniffles and no big deal since it came from Africa.

There are no responsible adults in this whole thing from top to bottom. Just a lot of selfish mad men and women.

I don’t understand why everyone on her flight is “at risk” if it is perfectly fine to travel from West Africa to the U.S. and why is she in a specialized hospital quarantined from other patients if you can’t contract it from someone sitting next to you on a bus......

Isn’t our biggest health platform the size of our soft drinks or the calorie count at fast food restaurants ? Don’t eat/drink that stuff it could kill you !

And the liberal loons at CNN described her as a “sweetheart” in their article. Yep, thanks to typhoid Mary, tens, if not hundreds of folks have been exposed. I wonder what, pray tell, her symptoms were? Will we find out tomorrow that she was vomiting everywhere? Second, the CDC better hope that their theory is correct in that ebola is more readily transmissible when the patient is at an advanced stage.

Either way, Typhoid Mary, provided she recovers, should face criminal charges and a revocation of her license. How incredibly stupid and self centered of her to take a flight after wading around the waste products of an ebola infected patient?
