The Problem With Race In America
The Michigan Chronicle ^ | October 20, 2014 | Janaye Ingram

According to Merriam-Webster, the first known use of the term “racism” was in 1933, but the practice of racism was well learned by that time. In the United States, slaves were brought to this land by Europeans who thought that the skin color and customs of the African captives made them less than equal to the “civilized” White settlers. That belief system permeated the treatment of Blacks in this country for hundreds of years, and in many ways, has yet to cease. The term is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “a belief that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.” There are some, me included, that believe that power is part of the true definition of racism – combining prejudice with the power to act on that prejudice results in racism.

Today, there are few things worse in this country than being called a “racist.” It’s one of the biggest insults and dirtiest words someone can say. Just the accusation has caused countless celebrities to produce tears and apologies and proclaim their love for their one Blackish friend who might not have known until that moment that they were the token. That fact doesn’t change the truth that there are many people who fit the definition of being racist, but because the word itself has been so maligned, people often feel that they have to do something heinous to be described that way.

The truth of the matter is, racism permeates most things done in this society, from the content of our television shows and blockbuster movies to who receives corporate promotions to the way we police our communities to where we live to who we hire to how we treat our customers to what we sell our consumers to how we educate our children....

Okay, it's going on 150 years since we eliminated slavery, yet nothing is ever good enough. There are still airplanes and ships headed for Africa every day, missy. I'll take up a collection to get you a ticket.

Is there such a thing as a “happy” Liberal? I’ve never met a Liberal who wasn’t miserable.

Since the anti racists squabble called the Civil War, white people have made great strides in overcoming the disease of racism, but in their rush to rid themselves of it, they gave it to black people.

A load of cr@p. People who write this twaddle weren't around in the bad old days when black people were really treated as second class citizens or even invisible. Today, how many black actors are stars? How many tv shows feature black people? How many black athletes have promotional deals with large corporations? How many black people live in upscale communities where they might not have been welcome years ago? And how many black children attend the same schools as white children?

I remember stories of how movies like Gone With the Wind and others which had black actors could not be shown in parts of the Deep South at all, or they had to be edited to remove scenes with black actors. I remember when Nat King Cole's variety show was cancelled because it couldn't get national sponsors. I remember segregation in housing and education and people not being hired for jobs because of their skin color.

These youngsters don't know what they're talking about. This country has bent over backwards to right the wrongs of the past and to give black people far more opportunities than their parents or grandparents never had. For crying out loud, we have a black or semi-black president now. If a huge segment of the black population won't take advantage of these opportunities, it's not the fault of white people or anyone else.

Time for the black community to quit the racism rhetoric and take care of themselves.

... they gave it to black people.

Black people have always had it. It's actually called "Tribalism". Some American Indian Tribes had it, too. Though not all of them.

Africans, though; it's pretty universal. They hate pretty much everyone. It's the rare ones who don't hate.

The purpose of this odd definition is to make it impossible for black people to be racist.

Since only whites have power in the relaionship, only they can be guilty of this worst of all sins.

The problem with race in America is that whites, generally, don’t know what to do with race in America. So they pretend it doesn’t exist. That leads to it’s own set of problems.

Couple more points come to mind:

She presents no evidence that racism is this dominating factor in the lives of black Americans, she simply asserts it.

She’s pretty clearly got a good deal more European than African ancestry herself.

I think her definition, and the dictionary’s, of the word is wrong. I’d prefer it to mean hatred of members of other races, which is a secondary definition in some but not all dictionaries.

Many black people in America are a product of the same forces that teach the children in the West Bank and Gaza to hate the jews - there is always someone to blame. At some point any people fed garbage can no longer discern what true fare tastes like - this is the problem in America - the truth or reason are outside of the thought process of people taught to be angry. Without a healthy dose of point-counterpoint or cause-effect on which to reason, there can be no reason, period

Agreed.

I’d also like to point out that white racism as the dominating factor in black life is absolutely necessary to their worldview.

If white racism is actually minimal in its direct effect on blacks, the only other possible explanation for black problems is something about blacks themselves, whether that be hereditary, cultural or something else. This possibility is of course impossible to even consider.

Therefore, as white racism diminishes, it is insisted upon with greater and greater vehemence. The only alternative explanation cannot and must not be considered. To even believe that such an alternate explanation might exist is itself racist.

The collective ignorance is a big factor; only education can fix that, but Democrats (like slaveowners of centuries past) won’t allow blacks to be educated.

Ms. Ingram, if you want to talk racism, why not address the genocides that are done regularly between African or Arab tribes. They may be the same color but the intent is the same.

Or better yet, you live in Michigan, go live in Detroit if you don't and see the truth there. See if it's the bad white man causing troubles there. Or, *gasp* is the bad white man trying to save Detroit?

Besides that, Ms. Ingram, you are only repeating what another "race baiter" has told you before. You are now part of the problem.

On another front, IMO, there is an ethnic cleansing planned in this country because the "murderous, money-hungry, evil" white man is getting pretty thin, these days.

Which exempts blacks from being racist because, in her view, they lack the power. How convenient.

The Democrat NEA teachers teach Black children every day that all their problems stem from the racism of Whites. Never mind that BIG Government has destroyed the Black family, the basic foundation for every culture, and Whites could disappear tomorrow with little effect ion their cultural rot.

The Democrat Party works to keep Blacks locked in their prison of victimhood, because Blacks dependent on government hand-outs provide White Deocrats with their government jobs. They are the new masters of American Blacks, just as Lyndon Johnson planned it when he said his war on Poverty would “have the n*****s voting Democrat for 200 years.”

Then you, Janaye, are a moron. Power has nothing to do with racism. You cannot cure a racist by taking away his power. If he was a racist with power, he will be a racist without power.

The very idea that racism requires power stems from the racist notion that whites wield all the power, and are therefor racist, while blacks are completely powerless, and are therefor not guilty of their own racism. It's a comforting definition for lazy racist blacks, but it's not rooted in reality.

The best way to think of it I know is a thought experiment.

Let’s assume every black person woke up tomorrow with white skin, blond hair and blue eyes.

How much difference would it make in their lives?

Very darn little, it any at all. They’d still have all the problems they do today, because most of them have little or nothing to do with their race.

330,000 WHITE UNION military KNOWINGLY went to their deaths to free the African American slaves during the Civil War, they FOLLOWED the directives and emancipation orders of their government, a government THEY ELECTED. I have never heard an establishment, professional, progressive/ African-American, or White Progressive ever ACKNOWLEDGE, much less “thank” these dead men for their sacrifices, nor recognize the 260,000 White Union military who were wounded and/or grievously disabled, nor the widows, nor the children, nor the families of the military who also suffered.
Check my Tagline.
