During qualifying, they shoot at 200, 300, and 500.
Last fall my grandson went thru Parris Island, was high shooter in his battalion. Naturally it was due to Gramp's great instruction. A proud Gramp, I might add.

My friend got a 1-shot, 650-ish yd deer kill last season.
I asked why she didn’t use a scope and she said because she couldn’t find it and was in a hurry because she needed to feed the baby before she could go to the field.
Yep.
I find that shooting/hunting is just as complicated as you want it to be, in general, up to about 1,000 yards. And many people want it to be pretty over-complicated. :)
My admiration for the unmatched marksmanship of you and everybody you know is boundless. Why, I'm certain the instructors at Parris Island would be very interested in moving their entire damned organization to your neighborhood, hoping just a little bit of your magic might rub off on the recruits.
Those wussies use ACOG sights, not manly iron like ya'all....and they use 'em at 500 yds and under. I hope we never have to depend on their like for our defense.

Shooting a deer at 650 with iron sight is not a humane task. Yeah, you MIGHT get lucky and get a one shot kill (and it WILL be luck).
But the odds are far greater of a clean miss. Next on the odds sheet is a horrible wound that means a slow death. Not what an ethical hunter wants.
Now I shoot a customized magnum rifle, handloads, a BIG scope, and practice out to 600 yards, shooting 3/4 MOA. I shot a 475 yd one shot kill, once, and decided that was pushing it too far. So I limit myself at 350 or so. I ALWAYS make one shot kills, and average around 18 deer a year. I don't mind killing 'em, but detest wounding 'em.
Long range hunting CAN be ethical, but it takes a good shooter, good conditions, and GREAT equipment. I have a co-worker who is just amazing, a great shot and spends mega-bucks on equipment. When he takes a long range hunting shot, he KNOWS he will hit it well.
