A US jury on Tuesday found a college friend of the accused Boston Marathon bomber guilty of lying to authorities in a terrorism investigation.

Robel Phillipos, 21, was charged with lying about having visited suspected bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's dorm room three days after the 2013 attack that killed three people and injured more than 260.

Phillipos and two friends removed a backpack containing empty fireworks shells from the suspected bomber's room.

Phillipos, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was on trial for two criminal counts of lying to investigators, one for saying he did not remember the visit and one for denying it. He later signed a written confession admitting to it, following an FBI interrogation.

Defense witnesses included Phillipos' college and high school friends, who testified to his marijuana use, and former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, a family friend, who described Phillipos as having been confused during his FBI interviews.

They should make this lie the same as treason (planning against the US) and hang him.

Seriously.

Treasury Department denies it was terrorism.

He clearly was in on the plot or he would not have gone to remove evidence. That is treason and accessory to terrorism and murder.

Lying to investigators? That is it? Oh, I see everything is ok afterall because he is a friend of Democrat Michael Dukakis. That absolves him of guilt of treason & terrorism.

One would think that after your good buddy kills innocent people in a terrorist attack it would likely halt the friendship?
Apparently not for this particular nitwit.
He is either stupid beyond comprehension, approves of murder, or is a comrade-in-arms for the cause. Take a pick.

Let the punishment fit the crime. Tie him up with a big sign that says “Boston marathon Conspirator” in the middle of Copley Square. There won’t even be a 1 inch square of skin left...

Bostonians are liberals but also known to be capable of great anger.

Frankly, I think that criminal penalties for lying to government agents are ridiculous. You could tell the USDA that you weren’t raising poppies, and if that were false. you could go to jail. I doubt that many people know that they face a legal penalty if they make false statements.

Sure, there could be penalties against lying while under oath, but giving the federal government the right to punish you for a lie or misstatement is gross overreach in my opinion.

Since it is Massachusetts, and let’s forget the liberal politically correct idiocy that runs that state, set up some old fashioned stocks in Copley Square.

There are still enough Irish there to get the correct job done with this scumbag. (/proud of my Irish heritage)

I have no sympathy for this wad of scum but I am puzzled as to why, if the government and its agents can lie to us, we can’t lie to them. Why is this a crime since it seems to me the modus operandi of the complainant?

Well, it should also be illegal for authorities to lie to the public.

If so, I know of a lot of politicians that should be in prison.

But I agree. Hang this guy.
