An American warden visits Norway's 'prison utopia'

As reported here, retired superintendent James Conway, who worked at New York’s Attica Prison for 38 years, got the shock of his life when he visited Holden Prison, one of Norway’s newest correctional facilities. “This is prison utopia,” said Conway, adding that if Attica inmates could have designed their own jail, “it would have looked a lot like Holden.” He summed up his impressions of the place this way: “I don't think you can go any more liberal – other than giving the inmates the keys.”

Crap. Holder is taking notes on this.

So he can design his new digs after the trial? Not that there will ever be one since he’ll probably leave his job with a (p)residential pardon for any past or future violations of the law.

So what’s the recidivism rate at Holden Prison compared to Attica?

Except for conservative prisoners. They’ll be sent to to the gulags.

Sounds like a nice place. Having such a nice place to return to, I wonder how it affects recidivism?

Spacious living rooms complete with large TV sets and a dartboard.
Kitchens equipped with real knives and forks.
A workshop stocked with sharp tools and hammers.
An Xbox and a recording studio, including electric guitars.

I'm starting a Kickstarter campaign to get airfare to Norway. I will then rob the first store I come across. Please help.

“Sounds like a nice place. Having such a nice place to return to, I wonder how it affects recidivism?”

According this this article from a few years ago, it’s significantly lower than US prisons. 20% vs 50-60% in the US.

Oh man, this brought back memories of an old TV show from around 1958!
I think it was Jack Benny and his guest star was Mickey Rooney who had just starred in a film about Baby Faced Nelson.

In the comedy skit they talk about how today’s (1958) prisons are such soft places.

One prisoner is getting his shoes shined, When the shine is completed, the prisoner says to the shine boy, “Thank you, Warden!”

Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world, around 20%. Ours is much higher, between 40-50%.

So this is not their normal prison, this is a new prison with new ideas.

This is more like the work release prisons and white collar prisons we have nationally.

What would be more interesting is where they house their violent offenders.

Give this man a prize, I think we have a winner. Anytime you compare Northern European societies to the USA you have to take into consideration the people you are talking about. I’m sure Norway’s prisons can be run more liberally, why, because the inmates are Norwegian. You hear about how great Sweden’s social welfare is, true, but again the system is run for and by SWEDES. Everybody be honest, what would the USA be like if our demographic was similar, paradise I would predict.

I don’t know if you can make a direct comparison of recidivism between the US and Norway - and attribute the difference to the prison system.

As far as I know, Norway doesn’t have the kind of gang activity that we do....i.e. an entire class of people who have chosen crime as a profession. It doesn’t matter how nice you treat them in prison...as soon as they get out, they will ‘get back to work’ and commit more crimes.

Norway does not have a death penalty, as evidenced by Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 8 people by bombing and the 69 teenagers by gun shot, and wounded another 319 people in 2011 and was sentenced to 21 years (10 with good behavior.)
Ragnar Lothbrook would executed the scum by the Viking Blood Eagle method of execution.
