In a tragic ending to her life, terminally ill cancer patient Brittany Maynard took her life this past weekend by legally taking a lethal dose of drugs to commit suicide. Her decision to kill herself sparked a national debate on assisted suicide and, now, pro-life advocates are concerned euthanasia activists will use her death to promote legalizing assisted suicide in more states.
“I know that I am supposed to keep quiet and simply offer condolences,” pro-life attorney and euthanasia expert Wesley Smith wrote shortly after Maynard’s death “Frankly, I doubt her family would want them from megiven how her illness and death were politicized in the cause of using our great empathy for her to demolish laws against doctor-prescribed death and my implacable opposition to that dark agenda.”
“But, of course, I am saddened. Who wouldnt be? Her cancer and death, if the report is accurate, are a terrible tragedy. I wish her husband, family, and friends nothing but the best,” Smith said.
But Smith issued a stern warning for the exploitation of Maynard’s death to come.
“Expect suicide advocates to now use her death to stoke emotions even higher around the assisted suicide debate. But emotionalism is the last approach that should be taken in pondering such a radical, culturally transforming agenda and the threat legalized assisted suicide poses to the most weak and vulnerable among us,” he said.
Smith said he wouldn’t be surprised with the pro-euthanasia group Compassion and Choices videotaped Maynard’s death as a publicity tool.
“Thats the kind of thing assisted suicide/euthanasia promoters have been doing since Jack Kevorkian took his lethal injection of Thomas Youk to 60 Minutes. I hope I am mistaken,” he said.
That euthanasia activists would exploit the death of someone like Maynard is not surprising — given that they were essentially pushing her to kill herself.
Top assisted suicide proponent Rita Marker noted before Maynard died that Compassion and Choices was clearly interested in her taking her own life — and getting people signed up for its mailing list to promote their advocacy and get donations. From, A Deadly Campaign Masked as a Personal Decision.
This explosion of coverage was due to a public campaign facilitated by Compassion & Choices (the former Hemlock Society) to legalize Oregon-style doctor-prescribed suicide in every state.
The organization has established the Brittany Maynard Fund to raise money for political campaigns to legalize doctor-prescribed suicide in targeted states across the country.
And, to strengthen the resolve of the young woman for whom the campaign is named, Compassion & Choices has posted Britannys Card on its website. Lets get 1 million people to sign Britannys card, states the message, adding, Sign the card and let Brittany know you support her bravery in this very tough time.
But sending a message comes with a catch. In a startling note of hucksterism, the site states that By signing Brittanys Card, you agree to receive periodic communication from Compassion & Choices.
The left is for suicide for the elderly and the sick. It’s for murder for unborn babies. It wants to keep murderers and terrorists alive, by opposing the death penalty.
I can’t get too misty eyed over this. As a Christian I believe that you are required to embrace the death God sends you. Some people have an easier death than others and its not for me to question why.
Right now I imagine Brittany is explain to God why she felt like she could make his decisions for him. I don’t ever want to be in that position.
Sadly, I doubt she will find peace in her death by suicide. Let us pray for the repose of her soul and through the mercy of God may she find eternal rest and let perpetual light shine upon her.
It would be hilarious if the cure for her cancer was discovered this week.
Ah, well, maybe not for her (as she’s voluntarily in hell right now). But it would be a good lesson for the rest of us.
“Right to Die = Duty to Die. ..”
Sad.
People should not go against our Creator’s will.
“Tough subject.”
Thoughtful response.
That’s an excellent point.
I agree.
Thanks for the ping!
did not know you were on the select committee to condemn folks to hell. don't assume all people have the same beliefs as you.
Maybe the activists will commit suicide as a group to show their support.
They say nothing about Proverbs: He who loves death hates Me." I'm not super religious but I'm being flamed by "choicers" who are cheerleaders for suicide and the death cult has them and they may not ever get it but it's fun to link them to death cultists cuz it makes choice seem less like choice when you are actually being manipulated by dark forces with deep pockets. They are the ones who call good evil and evil good. We went through this with Terri. How wrong to not murder her! It was evil for us good people to try to save her (not in a coma, not PVS Terri Schiavo.)
“No doubt her suffering was terrible with seizures and the like, but this shouldnt be allowed.”
We need more federal laws to ensure that people have less control over their life-decisions.
I’m not on the committee, but I do know the rules. “Thou shalt not murder” includes murdering yourself.
If you see a sign that says “High voltage. If you touch this you will die! DO NOT TOUCH” and then you see some moron touch it and die, are you judging them by saying they died because they touched it? NO you are just speaking the truth. It doesn’t matter what the moron believes. If he touches it he will die.
Here we have the same thing. God clearly says “Thou shalt not murder” and some moron goes and murders herself. The published penalty for murder is hell. It doesn’t take any judgment at all to say that she’s going to hell. The written word clearly establishes that.
It doesn’t matter what anyone believes. They are certainly allowed to have beliefs different than mine. The problem for them is they are going to be judged by GOD on what HE requires. Which just happens to be written in His word (”Thou Shalt Not Murder”) as I pointed out above.
Is this sarcasm or don't you believe that the right to life is constitutionally protected.
Do you even know what "unalienable" means? Most liberals/libertarians don't.
you assume everyone has the same rules. not all religions treat this sad practice the same.
what God clearly said to you is not necessarily what God said to someone else. you are smug in your certainty of what God wants for everyone. why don’t you worry about yourself and quit condemning people for God. Its all very well to condemn until you become in the same situation as the young woman whose not only terminally ill, but with a huge brain tumor that surely affects her thinking processes.
“Judge not less ye be judged”: Matthew 7:1
Aren’t these the same people who say this is an extremely cruel method of executing criminals?
I was also wondering if this is sarcasm. I believe it is.
This is a common, but incorrect theology, as incorrect as saying that if someone dies while telling a lie, he is doomed.
