Think Twice About Illinois’s Crony Republican Governor-Elect
SPECTATOR.ORG ^ | 07 NOVEMBER 2014 | WILLIAM J KELLY

With Bruce Rauner’s election in Illinois, the Republican Governor’s Association has checked this bluer-than-blue state off its Democrat tick list. It must feel good—but I’m less than sanguine.

For the better part of a year, powerful Chicago Democrats have been whispering in my ear, extolling Rauner’s virtues. I heard similar insider political “chatter” about Barack Obama from these same Democrats long before he ran for U.S. Senate. Even the left-leaning Chicago Sun-Times suddenly changed its no-endorsement policy to back Rauner — and only Rauner — without even the basic formality of a candidate questionnaire or interview.

It’s Illinois - what difference, at this point, does it make on who its governor is?

I voted for Chad Grimm, since he agrees with the republican platform more than Rauner does.

Do you think a conservative Republican will oppose Rauner in the 2018 primary? Last March, he won about 40% of the vote. If he has one conservative primary opponent, that conservative might win.

Good commentary and I concur. Illinois is a mess. There’s so much taxpayer gold spread around. I don’t see a fix.

No. The Combine will bury any one alive who defies them.

They own every politician, prosecutor and judge in IL.

No one can stand up to them and if you try, they will ruin your life.

In IL politics, you get bought and stay bought, whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican and want to have a long political career.

Its like Haiti. Elections are always fixed and change nothing.

Yes, probably. But I have no exception that person will be someone capable of beating Rauner or winning a general election if they somehow did beat Rauner. It'll be someone like that guy Hugues who ran against Kirk, that guy was so bad a candidate I think he was a plant.

I am aware of all of this in general as I have spent a lot of time in Chicago in the last fifteen years. I do wish there was a good book on the last thirty years of Illinois and Chicago that named the names and told the stories.

It would be a good read.

Don’t worry, the “columnist” Bill Kelly has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Chicago.

So glad Quinn is gone. Now it’s time for Rauner to put his money where his mouth is. I pray Rauner is successful.

Don’t believe everything you read, especially from Wlliam Kelly as source. All of this was reported last year and Kelly is disingenuous at best. Go to opensecrets.org for yourself. While you will see some donations to democrats, the vast amount of Rauner’s donations, dating back as far as the records reveal (1994 I think) went to REPUBLICAN candidates.

Aside from visiting the museums it holds no allure to me due to the people who run it, and those who live there and elect them.

For me I really enjoy urban living. The trick is to find some like minded friends and the liberals that abound quickly learn that if they don't have an open mind they won't want to discuss politics with me. As with almost all conservatives, I'm better informed and because my politics are based on rational thought rather than emotion they really don't do well in a debate with me.

The corruption here is so pervasive it's hard to describe. Because I'm in real estate I really can't just pick up and go. I have been investing elsewhere and stopped buying in Chicago but it will be a while till I can completely relocate. In the meantime all I can do is give contributions to conservatives.

Fiscal reality will ultimately resolve this mess. When IL can no longer borrow because it defaulted on it's Bonds and the govt. employee pensions go broke change will come. It won't be pretty and will probably take a generation, but it will get fixed.

For me, I'm working towards the day my business interests won't be here so I'm not crushed when the Rats try to fix everything by destroying me.

Can we at least give this guy a chance? I think it’s unbecoming how this article automatically assumes that this guy would be a disaster as governor. Come on now.

Pat Quinn was one of the worst scumbags there is. I relished seeing him squirm in his less-than gracious concession statement. I think Rauner should be given a chance. With some of these states, we have to recognize that the alternative would be far worse. I think if Dillard or any of the others were nominated, the labor money would have completely overwhelmed the candidates and they’d be looking at another 4 years of Quinn. The unions were absolutely opposed to Rauner and he stared them down. Despite Dillard appearing moderate on labor unions, the unions would have turned their back on him and crushed him anyway.
