Senate Democrats are weighing plan to approve Keystone — and save (still exempt) Mary Landrieu

Senate Democrats are working on plans to hold a vote authorizing construction of the Keystone XL pipeline -- approval that Democrats believe might bolster the chances of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who faces a tough runoff election next month.

It was not immediately clear Tuesday night whether Republicans would consent to proceeding with such a vote during the lame-duck session that begins on Wednesday -- especially given the high stakes surrounding Landrieu's reelection race. Such a move would also draw howls from the environmental movement who had hoped that President Obama would resolve a years-long dispute over a long-awaited energy project in their favor.

Several Senate Democratic aides confirmed on Tuesday evening that talks are underway to allow for a vote authorizing construction of the pipeline in the coming days. The aides, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said that details on language of the bill authorizing and its timing were not yet settled, but likely would be among the topics of conversation as Congress reconvenes Wednesday.

At this point, I believe the company that was going to do Keystone has given up and is going to build a pipeline to Canada’s West Coast - to sell to the Chinese instead.

False. TransCanada has said recently they are still moving forward on the Keystone XL. There are several other pipeline projects on-going to move oil east, south and west from the Alberta Oil-Sands. One project was not going to take care of all future production.

Senate Democrats are working on plans to hold a vote authorizing construction of the Keystone XL pipeline -- approval that Democrats believe might bolster the chances of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who faces a tough runoff election next month.

That's what its all about. Not that it will help our energy supply, or provide good private sector UNION JOBS. It's all about getting Mary Landfill reelected. Now ask yourself, why was Hussein and the regime so opposed to this? Supposedly because of "environmental concerns". Did any of this change? No.
[NOTE: This isn't to imply that I believed this argument nor did any other thinking person]
But, it just illustrates what the left is about, POWER BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. They have no true principles or core beliefs, however misguided those beliefs may be.

I really don’t see how this will help Landrieu. Do the voters in LA have any doubt that Cassidy would also vote for Keystone in the new Congress — and a lot of other things (like repeal of the ACA) that we desire. What makes this a Landrieu vote-getter?

Reid is not only doing what may be in his political favor - but don’t be surprised if Zero vetoes the bill and Reid and others join the override vote. Reid’s power has been decimated by Zero and at this point he may want payback. Zero is totally out of touch with reality and having a veto over-ridden by a Democrat controlled Senate would probably set him off. Hopefully a very public hissy fit in which his mental problems are fully exposed and after which Biden and the Cabinet can step in and declare him “unable to discharge the duties” under the 25th amendment, Section 4.

How freaking ironic — that the dems feel they have to vote for Keystone, in order to SAVE a dem senate seat! Fortunately, it won’t work.

If they really thought something like this could work the DNC would not have pulled their funding.

Well, it’s like those democrats who want welfare but also cheered when Osama was killed. Not every democrat wants the enviro agenda. Not every democrat is against guns or for gay marriage. This is going for the traditional blue collar vote.

The pipeline to the west coast of BC is not necessarily just to sell to China. That is only one option. Once the oil gets to an ocean going port it can be shipped to anywhere in the world based on whomever will pay the most at the time. Much of that oil, because of NAFTA, will still end up at US refineries.

The point of Keystone is that it will give the US refineries in OK, TX & LA a freight advantage in $/gallon to transport this heavy crude to their refineries. These plants are the most efficient in turning this type of oil into a finished product. With the shipping advantage, they can pay more FOB Alberta than other refineries.

The main reason for the pipeline is that Alberta is producing more oil than the refineries in Canada and the US that are already taking their oil can use. There are refineries in Edmonton and other places that are taking this heavy sulfur crude oil. Most refineries, like the ones in WA state and California can not refine this product. They are taking the oil from ND that is light sweet crude. The refineries in TX, and LA are already getting this heavy crude. However, the current cost to move it from northern Alberta to a place where it is loaded on a ship is rather expensive. Once it is on the super tanker, the price to move it somewhere in the world goes down significantly. This is what the greenies do not want. IF the cost to deliver this product goes down, they will increase the RAPE of the EARTH in northern CANADA. They hate this oil production method as bad as open pit coal mining. This is the reason why the big fight against Keystone.

Yes, I get that. My point is that the vast majority of the electorate is against Obamacare. Landrieu will never vote to repeal that while Cassidy would.

Union jobs loading and re-loading the oil tankers, oil barges, oil trains, and oil storage facilities now. Those go away if the pipeline is built -> The pipeline is SAVING the money otherwise needed to pay people in those (democrat) states.

Pipeline employees and pipeline workers are in republican states!

Warren Buffet’s railroads are moving the oil now.

But, through it all, enviro opposition to ANY energy efficiency and lower energy costs ANYWHERE!

The Dems have only a limited amount of time in the lame duck. They have to count on the House cooperating on moving on the issue in the lame duck. Time will need to be taken from other issues such as ramming through nut-job federal court nominees.
IMO, dirty harry will not waste time helping miss piggy; he has to pack the court with commies first and foremost.
What the GOP should do is pretend to play nice on keystone in the Senate and waste some time; the House can always pretend to fumble the ball and run out of time.

Well you know good and damn well that Mitch the Bitch and Boo Hoo Boehner have already agreed to letting Landrieu back in the Senate for a vote on Keystone toot suite. If the Dim-ocrats have put it off for decades then, January will be OK. The economy will not crash between now and then just because of this one bill. Get Landrieu out now that Begich is gone.

I do not believe the BNSF railroad is involved in moving that much Alberta crude. The BNSF does not own track in Canada. The CPRS and CN move the Alberta crude in Canada. Thackney(or anyone else) feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

The BNSF is heavily involved in moving ND crude oil. The ND oil will still move by train until there is a more efficient way to move it(pipeline or barge). The purpose of the KEYSTONE pipeline is NOT to move ND oil. It is to move Alberta oil.

Not really NAFTA so much as cost of transportation. Asia is a lot farther away that Washington and California, where they import about a million barrels a day from farther away. Same reason the Alaska oil stays on the west coast even after the export ban was dropped.
