Indiana to Start Requiring Food Stamp Recipients Work, Be in Job Training, or Job Hunting

Next spring, thousands could be cut from Indiana’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [Food Stamps].

Indiana has previously waived the federal requirement that SNAP recipients are either employed, actively seeking employment or in training for future employment.

But now the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration has announced that, as of 2015, the federal requirement will be enforced and as a result, approximately 65,000 people will be cut from the program.

According to Fox 59 in Indianapolis, Indiana’s new requirement mandates that “any able-bodied Indiana adult without children will need to be working at least 20 hours a week, be in job training, or searching for employment in order to qualify.”

Rachel Sheffield, a research assistant in Domestic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation, said work requirements foster accountability:

Even in good economic times, work rates are low among able-bodied adults on food stamps. About half of food stamp households that include an able-bodied adult perform zero hours of work. Lifting the waiver would mean that able-bodied adults without dependents would be limited to three months of food stamps unless they are working or participating in some type of work program at least 20 hours a week. A work requirement encourages self-sufficiency for those who are able and also helps ensure that benefits are going to those most in need.

Indiana State Sen. Jim Merritt told Fox 59 that the work requirement holds SNAP recipients accountable.

“I support the idea if it’s incentivizing people to go back to work,” said Merritt.

John Whitaker, the executive director at the Midwest Food Bank in Indianapolis, told Fox 59 that one in six Indiana residents uses a food bank or pantry, and that he is concerned about the potential for this demand to increase once current SNAP recipients are cut.

“Sixty-five thousand people would equate to about what it would take to fill Lucas Oil Stadium for a really good game,” said Whitaker.

Yes, it's from last month. But it's relevant.

It's time to begin impeachments, and removal from the bench.

When I drive through Houston I see lots of things that people who draw unemployment and food stamps could be doing to “pay” for part of their benefits. IMO there is absolutely no reason why they couldn’t pick up trash, trim bushes, mow lawns, be trained to fix up homes of the very elderly which are falling into disrepair, wield a paint brush, etc. But it is going to take some enterprising and resourceful city leaders who are dedicated to getting people organized to work and off the dole.

Since Obama says the economy is humming better than a tuned Jaguar, they don’t need the food stamps.

Just how soon until these “unfortunates” develop back pains and go on full disability collecting tax free checks for the rest of their idle, listless lives? The only escape is for society to get tough on them and their spawn. I can’t see it happening. Why...they might “riot”.

what you mean how soon? i would not hesitate to say that MOST are already drawing disability! the system is so F’ed up that it’s bound to crumble sooner rather than later! We have a female “friend” of the family since childhood days that i grew up with that just got approved for disability benefits because she has an “addiction to weed” AND GOT BACK PAY FOR IT! HAVE YOU EVER IN YOUR LIFE HEARD SUCH A LOAD OF BULLSHITE?!?! and we have to struggle from check to check to keep food in the fridge and the bills paid!

I'd be far more impressed if the title was, "Welfare & food stamp recipients are required to WORK!"

No phony "job training" or even "job hunting," just work - period!!!

Wish they would add mandatory drug testing and revoke welfare for drug users and abusers. No drug dealers or users should be allowed to participate in the welfare system.

Also revoke or reduce welfare for convicted criminals and, if under-age, their parent, guardian, or family. No criminals should be allowed to participate in the welfare system.

Also set term limits for welfare payments and perform periodic reviews to renew or terminate welfare based on active participation, progress, and current needs. Find and eliminate the fraud and abuse in our current welfare systems.

Those found ineligible to participate in the government (taxpayer) funded welfare programs can turn to alternate sources such as friends, family, public funded organizations, and churches charities.

Those that cannot qualify for any welfare, must go to work or starve.

Being required to work or train is okay, just as long as they don’t have to have ID’s to collect the freebies. That would be welfare suppression.

"...or searching for employment in order to qualify.”

That's the easy out. Simply go online once a week, enter the names of a dozen local companies and claim you applied for jobs there and you're good to go. Should take of about 12 minutes.
