No, Reagan Did Not Offer An Amnesty By Lawless Executive Order
The Federalist ^ | November 20, 2014 | By Gabriel Malor

Today is the big day, and the Progressive media is in full spin to mitigate the anger Americans are expressing about President Obama’s decision to offer legal status to millions of people who broke the law. That spin has taken many forms, including the novel arguments that the executive branch is empowered to act whenever the legislative branch declines and that the executive branch’s enforcement discretion includes the affirmative grant of benefits not otherwise authorized by law. Most recently, however, Progressive columnists have settled on an old favorite tactic: justify Democratic misbehavior by claiming (falsely, as you will see) that a Republican did it first.

Obama, in contrast to Reagan and Bush 41, is not trying to implement a lawfully created amnesty. There has been no congressional amnesty. In fact, there has been no immigration action from Congress in the past few years except the post-9/11 REAL ID Act of 2005, which made it harder, not easier, for aliens to qualify for immigration relief. More than that, Congress declined to pass a legalization of the type Obama is issuing during both Obama’s term and in a hotly-contested bill during President Bush 43′s term.

Thus, Obama is clearly contravening both ordinary practice and the wishes of Congress—as expressed in statute—by declaring an amnesty himself. This is nothing like Reagan’s or Bush’s attempts to implement Congress’ amnesty. The progressive media’s claims otherwise are blatant lies, relying on their readers’ ignorance of events in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Such attempts should be rejected wherever they are found.

If Obama wants to justify his lawless immigration action, he will have to do it some other way than citing (blaming, more like) prior Republican presidents.

The MSM want everyone to think that Reagan and Bush did exactly the same thing ... I think it was wrong they did it but not the way 0bama is going to do it ... by fiat. “I’m the Emperor and will do what I will”

Obama is counting on the stupidity of the American people, as usual.

Reagan and Bush did it in conjunction with Congressional action. The executive actions were used to do things like end prosecutions already in progress. Practical stuff like that. Nothing at all like what Obama is contemplating.

I think this was pointed out to that nitwit Juan Williams by Will last night on FOX. He told Williams that signing a piece of legislation and then following up with executive orders implementing or clarifying a statute is not the same as writing your own law. Williams in the background could be seen doing his usual bobblehead nods.

The fallout will be interesting. I wonder how the liberal media will play it.

Exactly. Reagan signed legislation; Obama is issuing executive orders. Love how the MSM and tyrannical Democrats think everyone is so much dumber than they are.

A successful ‘Immigration’ ‘edict’ is just about as important to “O” as the chance of a successful ACA was. Actual significance or success do NOT matter at all!!

Whether or not either are successful, all HE wants it to be the guy who proposed them.

For HIM it's enough. After all....did he ever FINISH a thing he started?

Out here in the real world, we call it ‘throwing the s%$t on the wall, and walking away’. Maybe it will stick maybe it won't!

Who cares...??

“O” gets his bulls%$# name connected to an historic ‘event’ –for which he made NO effort and for which he took NO risk, either personal or professional… and for HIM, that's enough.

See, that tells you everything you need to know about him and who he is. Even his ‘corner’ doesn't care who he is...

For them, he’s the only sufficiently unscrupulous and selfish SOB they could find-phony and arrogant enough to settle for the ‘appearance of success’ rather than actually HAVING success!

They know and HE knows that failure will be eternally whitewashed and so much emotion will forever be associated with the thing, that he can be assured ginormous lecture fees and media adulation until Doomsday!!!

It’s a GIVEN that NOT ONE OF THEM will bear the burden or pay the price for a failure of any kind.

It’s a truly Kabuki administration…. Thanks Liberals!
