Obama's dangerous move on immigration
CNN ^ | 11/21 | David Gergen

Posted on 11/21/2014 9:47:03 AM PST by TangledUpInBlue

On many occasions during our history, presidents have tested the boundaries of their constitutional power through executive orders: Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus, his Emancipation Proclamation, Franklin D. Roosevelt's creation of the Works Progress Administration, FDR's awful internment of Japanese-Americans, and Harry Truman's integration of the armed forces were all accomplished through controversial executive orders.

During the 19th century, conventional wisdom held that presidents had only as much authority as the constitution explicitly granted; Teddy Roosevelt famously flipped that proposition on its head -- unless the Constitution explicitly forbids, he argued, the president has implied authority to act, especially as commander-in-chief. Many of his successors have agreed and usually the courts have gone along with them.

Even so, President Obama's executive order on immigration seems to move us into uncharted, dangerous waters. It is one thing for a president like Lincoln or FDR to act unilaterally in national emergencies. In nearly all the big examples of the past -- like the Emancipation Proclamation -- they were also acting as commander-in-chief. As the one foremost responsible for protecting the nation's existence, a president as commander-in-chief has long been recognized as having inherent powers that stretch well beyond those of normal governance.

I have to say, politics and slant aside, I have always liked Gergen and his lucid articles/commentary.

What I hate about this is Obama has succeeded in, once again, making it all about him. It’s like the election never happened and the Emperor is back on his throne.

No, I don’t have any brilliant suggestions to counter this but that’s his real plan, to be “The One’ in front of the people, now and forever.

“For a president to toss aside such deep traditions of governance is a radical, imprudent step. When a president in day-to-day operations can decide which laws to enforce and which to ignore, where are the limits on his power? Where are the checks and balances so carefully constructed in the Constitution?

If a Democratic president can cancel existing laws on immigration, what is to prevent the next Republican from unilaterally canceling laws on health care?”

BRAVO!

Gergen and his like want it both ways. They like Obama's amnesty but don't want to lose their credibility (for want of a better term) as the token MSM 'conservative'.

I expect all of the 'moderates' who've long been advising exactly this kind of amnesty will come out today huffing about Obama's 'dangerous power grab'.

Even to declare the 13th amendment null and void!

“Teddy Roosevelt famously flipped that proposition on its head — unless the Constitution explicitly forbids, he argued, the president has implied authority to act, especially as commander-in-chief.”

The words of an autocrat.

Now we are dealing with a narcissistic, megalomaniacal autocrat.

My 17 year old daughter heard him speaking last night and said, "he is always threatening, presidents aren't supposed to act like that"

I said watch some Hugo Chavez speeches. It's exactly how dictators talk.

Elections have consequences.

What a Republican house, senate and white house can look like in 2017, especially with 1 additional SCOTUS appointee.

1. Executive order, abortion is now illegal.
2. Executive order, liberal media has to give equal time to conservatives and advertisers have to support both.
3. Executive order, Looters will be shot on sight.

And on and on and on.

And that is the real reason he waited until after the election. It wouldn’t have been so “in your face” before the election. To tell us that’s what he was going to do was the final fingernail scratch on the face slap. No more worrying about live mics—it’s all right out there now.

Look at the quote in Post #3 though. That’s not exactly what I’d call “moderate” talk. I’ve seen essentially that same statement posted here many times.

Barone is completely correct.

What I wanted in the past from he and others in his league was to apply the same passion for law and order for illegal immigration. He didn't, quiet the opposite in fact.

So I really don't give his huffing and puffing much credence this morning.

.... Obama knows that the response to all of his transformational moves from the GOP and Conservatives has been mostly comprised of a lot of hot air. That is why he is moving quickly pretty much with impunity towards the final steps of the countries transformation. He is now moving outside of the structure of our government and law.

.... Conversely ... The opposition to him is moving within the slow confines of the legal environment and he knows very well, with all of the bickering and hot air being spouted ..... it will take a very long time for legal responses to his actions.

..... Basically, this country has pretty much been successfully quickly overthrown from within .... while any opposition is left defenseless and disorganized with it's collective heads spinning at a time when they should have been an unified organized cohesive team ... ready to counter any moves against this country. They were caught asleep in the night while the thief robbed this country blind then set it on fire.

.... Historians will not be kind when the post-mortem is performed upon this era of American history.

.... The GOP was too proud to stand up to it's responsibilities .... internal sniping bickering got the best of them while they turned a blind eye towards the true threat to this country.

.... Yup .... They learned much too late that .... Pride comes before the fall.

P> OBAMA’S WAR AGAINST THE AMERICAN WORKERS

Obama's Executive Amnesty Could REWARD MILLIONS OF IMMIGRANTS WHO VIOLATED OUR SOVEREIGNTY ENTERING ILEGALLY IN THE COUNTRY, BUT IT WILL PROFOUNDLY AFFECT THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF UNEMPLOYED AMERICAN BLUE COLLAR WORKERS.

Blacks are going to be the main collateral victims of Obama's anti-Black amnesty.

OBAMA’S UNCONSTITUTIONAL AMNESTY TO MIGRANTS THAT ARE LIVING ILLEGALLY IN THE U.S.A.

After destroying the best health care system in the world, Obama is determined to grant wide amnesty to foreigners living illegally in U.S. If Obama wants to make the U.S. into another banana republic, it seems he is well underway to reaching his goal.

The Republicans must make it perfectly clear that Obama has declared a merciless war against the American workers and the middle class of America. There are 92 million of able Americans out of the work force because they cannot find employment and Obama wants to legalize and give work permits to over 11 million illegal aliens allowing them to bring here the rest of their families. In other words, another 25 or 30 million that either will compete with Americans and legal immigrants searching for scarce jobs or are going to be added to welfare, bankrupting Medicaid and the food stamp system as well as ruining even more the quality of the public schools with the massive infuse of hundreds of thousands of children without speaking English to already overburdened schools systems.

Blacks are going to be the main collateral victims of Obama's anti-Black amnesty. Black Americans are already suffering higher unemployment since Obama took power. Obama’s new class of protected immigrants will take over their jobs and Blacks will be forced to share their welfare checks and food stamps with them

Let's flip the question. Just what is not allowed for an EO?
Can Obama remove term limits for the office of president?

Can he nullify any law with which he doesn't agree.

I'm sure he will push every radical agenda he can now. It's only going to get worse from now until 2017.
