History repeats itself only in unique ways. That why it is so difficult to profit from history’s lessons. Victor Davis Hanson after a comprehensive dressing down of the current administration concluded by comparing it to late Roman empire, however he seemed to find solace in the fact that it lasted another 500 hundred years before the end. I guess he means Tiberius to Romulus Augustulus and all the good times in between.
Inn the case of Western Roman Empire, Christianity was ascending and the old wineskins built by paganism wore down and finally burst. In the East it continued just fine for another millennium.
In our case we have a foolhardy attempt to impose de-Christianization from the top, that cannot succeed. I don’t see any parallels, really.
