The St. Paul Public Schools superintendent apologized Tuesday for a Twitter comment on the Ferguson, Mo. shooting that sparked a flurry of reaction, most of it negative. Authorities announced Monday that a grand jury decided against indicting white police officer Darren Wilson for fatally shooting Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man. Soon after the announcement, Superintendent Valeria Silva tweeted, "No indictment for officer Wilson! Very sad day in America. How do I explain this to my black students?" Silva later deleted the tweet and clarified her intent. But her remark offended many, including some who agreed with the grand jury's determination and others who were angered by it.

How to explain it? How about the truth? The grand jury spent days going over the evidence and interviewing witnesses and they determined that that the officer acted correctly.

Pretty easy. You tell your black students that if they grow up to be thugs that rob a store owner, disregard what the police say & then run toward & attack the police, they, like any other person in any other country in the world, could get shot. There, solved her problem.

Why people in positions like hers even get onto Twitter under their own name and tweet this type of thing I do not understand. If I wanted to tweet something like that, I’d make a Twitter name just for tweets I didn’t want to be attributed to me.

We see that here day in and day out!

Well, it was pretty funny watching Megan Kelly trying to explain it to an black adult educated professional colleague of hers.

He didn’t get it, and he won’t get it. Does not compute.

And then it was also funny watching Mark Fermin, oh the delicious irony, then explain that it is a waste of time trying to explain it to them, because they are not rational.

So yeah, wouldn’t even waste my time on it.

She could start by studying up on MO. grand jury procedures. Ya know, being a teacher and all.

Do they have any notion at all about a grand jury?

Speaking of which, these jurors deserve a lot of credit. No one in the public arena has really praised them for their work or, frankly, for their courage.

Yet another “educator” moron. Just how do these degenerates get into these positions of responsibility? What a clueless racist. Doesn’t she realize that the Grand Jury sought the truth and found it? She should be fired without benefits immediately. What a complete, utter fool. I bet the taxpayers shovel upwards of $230,000.00 to her each year. Disgusting.

haha!.. i was impressed that they used "man." every time i heard or read, "child," or "teenager," i would say--"he was 18... he was a man!" this is the first time i read him described as an 18-year old man...

She should make this a teachable moment that illustrates several important points.

Guilt or innocence should be based on the facts and law and not rumor and outright lies.

She should explain how juries and grand juries work and this is an example of how the system worked to keep an innocent man out of jail despite the demands of a mob and interference by the President.

That you should obey a police officer even if you think the officer is wrong and never, ever, threaten an officer with physical harm. He or she has a gun and knows how to use it.

That a lie travels around the world before the truth crosses the street.

That you can't always believe what you hear on TV news and read in the paper. Shoot, make that most of what you hear.

My teachers used situations like this to teach and they did it without a political slant. Explaining how a grand jury works is exactly what my teachers would have done. We might even have conducted our own mock grand jury investigation of something.
