I agree that there are too many unlikely or unbelievable aspects to this story for it to be given any credence.
The comparison with blood-libel and witch stories, and tales of occult meetings with the devil in person, are very apt.
But these stories work. For example, there are still people who believe the Brawley case, which was a total fabrication. That case caused all sorts of charges of police misconduct, and demonstrations led by the same actors still very much on the scene today.
These stories succeed because they get attention for the person making up the tale, and when it is disproven (or, as in one case I know, retracted), there are little or no consequences for the pretend victim.
Yes it was a big accomplishment.
One of them is now militantly gay and was never attracted to women. Go figure.
