Yep, BBC is confirming a 2nd rescue mission, but not saying he has died? See: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-30358252
I’m sure he did good work, but he was not there serving the American people.
The rescue attempt was a courtesy, not a responsiblity.
True, but the US has a track record of helping out non-employee citizens in trouble (right or wrong, remember the 1-year old on a sail boat rescue? http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/04/07/parents-sick-1-year-old-defend-taking-kids-on-boat-trip-after-navy-rescue/
And now completely conflicting news reports!! Reuters reporting he is rescued successfully: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/06/us-yemen-usa-hostage-idUSKCN0JK06F20141206?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&utm_source=twitter
“Fog of War” situation I guess...we’ll see.
We can’t equate this guy with a Marine or ambassador held hostage.
It is great that we have military men willing it put their lives on the line for a citizen, but we may not be able to rescue all citizens who willingly put themselves in a war zone.
BTW-when I was a kid, we lived overseas in an unstable region and had to evacuate under the cover of darkness with no US government involvement.
We don’t know the accuracy of these early reports, but here is a new one from the NYTs.
“Early reports of the overnight raid were sketchy. The official said that the journalist, Luke Somers, 33, was apparently shot by his captors as the raid unfolded and was badly wounded when the commandos reached him. By the time Mr. Somers was flown to a United States naval ship in the region, he had died from his injuries, the official said Saturday.”
The latest (backs up NYT report Ansel12 posted): http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-30358665
Thanks! I am finding that I have to go more & more to UK news for latest breaking/most unbiased news reporting lately! US MSM is getting worse & worse! (Not to mention rags like Rolling Stone!)
The odds were long, but I’m glad they tried. Hope any of the bad guys that managed to live through it all figures out that hanging with Jihadis ain’t worth the trouble.
Condolences to Lucy and the remainder of Luke Somer’s family and friends.
Some of this resembles the time when we were dealing with the Apache, in those days low ranking married enlisted soldiers who couldn’t afford the cost of a small pistol, would save to buy one anyway, for their wife, to kill the children and herself.
While the Muslims are not as brutal as the Apache, it is close enough, for 130 years later.
Amen.
Hopefully the mode of death was more humane than that which he faced.
Given what we know about this administration, I wouldn’t rule out a drone strike at all. They might reason that with a nice, clean drone strike, there will be no decapitation video. The media would happily just sweep the rest under the table and call it a mishap. Just a bump in the road, ya know.
“An American photojournalist and a South African teacher held by al-Qaida militants in Yemen have been killed in a failed U.S. rescue attempt, authorities said Saturday.”
SA teacher also killed...

You are right. Everything Obama touches turns to crap.
Well, at least they tried. Agree that dying this way is better than having his head sawed off on video.
What, no situation room photo-ops?
was conducted in partnership with the Yemen's government and its security forces
I suspect the mistake was telling the Yemen government.
