A huge fire has destroyed an apartment building under construction in central Los Angeles, shutting two major cross-city freeways.

More than 250 firefighters tackled the overnight blaze in the downtown area, which was brought under control early on Monday.

There were no reports of injuries, and it is not thought anyone was in the seven-storey building at the time. A huge blaze in downtown Los Angeles There were no reports of any injuries or deaths

The fire could be seen from miles away, but no cause has been identified.

"It's a large building, about a block long. The whole building is a total loss. The fire did spread into two neighbouring buildings," said fire department spokesman David Ortiz.

Sections on the 110 and 101 freeways remained closed on Monday morning.

That’s huge....much bigger than I had thought.

I guess there wasn’t anybody there at the time, since it wasn’t occupied, but it’s good that no firefighters were injured. I wonder if whether it was insurance fraud or an anti-development assault. It could have been an accident, I suppose, but that seems like a pretty remote possibility.

No one wants more condos or apartments...No more civilian barracks...The greedy AH’s collecting the taxes could care less the roads and freeways that are already at max capacity...Screw them....

As it turns out LA is going through a major shortage of housing. It is driving up the cost of rentals that it’s actually cheaper to buy a home now than rent.

Fire Departments have arson investigators and so do insurance companies.

Arson is not covered under contractor policies. An accident would be.

the fire department doent think it was “accidental”

The huge L.A. fire that engulfed an apartment tower over an area the size of a city block is being treated as a criminal fire.

Although blazes “of this magnitude” are always treated as criminal fires, “it’s very rare for the entire building to be engulfed at once,” Capt. Jaime Moore told the Los Angeles Times.

I Pray it wasnt the arson contingent of the occupy shmucks!

No, were not going through a housing shortage...The GD government keeps importing foreigners as fast as they can...We're max'd out in that department too.

Check the freeways in LA...It's a joke, the greedy lining their pockets in LA could care less if the roads are gridlocked....All they want to do is jam more people in for more tax money and bribes from the developers..

They could care less about anything else.

I'm all for them building this garbage in Phoenix, Dallas or Denver.

Only saw post from BBC - if LAT covered the fire shouldn’t they be posted here instead? It appeared that only the BBC covered it - and on Drudge ...

Because a FReeper selects one source to post, you think it wasn’t covered by anyone else?

They had multiple stories about it today.

Occupy Wall Street, Earth Liberation Front, etc., they are the same people. I call them watermelons. They are red inside. I wish the cops would start cracking their heads when they block street intersections and freeways. Those commie agitators are emboldened.

Around here, it is the roofers and their solder torches left hot. Go to lunch, the roof catches fire.
