Mexican Megafarms Supplying U.S. Market Are Rife With Labor Abuses

--snip-- They live in rooms 6-by-8 generally, and shedlike housing, sometimes no furniture. They sleep on scraps of cardboard," Marosi says.

The workers are forced to buy food from the company stores, where the prices are heavily inflated. Even making $8 to $12 a day, which is more than they might make at home, they can't keep up with the high costs.

"A lot of these places, they illegally withhold the wages of the workers; they're there on three-month contracts, they're not paid until the end," he says. That means they don't even have the money to catch a bus and escape the farm.

If only the Mexican government cared about workers in their own country as much as they care about workers in the US.

Since the beginning of time, someone, somewhere, toiled in the sun for shit pay. It’s part of the human condition.

The local small town supermarket near me sells meat which comes from Mexico. It is Ok but seems to vary more than some. I got two of the best ribeyes ever from them but not always really tender.

There’s no good reason Mexico isn’t a first world country on par with the USA and Canada.

A corrupt government from top to bottom rife with organized crime and an apathetic population who can simply walk away for easy livin in the USA.

If there was ever a country we needed to invade for their own good its Mexico.

As an undergrad I was a geography major. One thing I remember was that Mexico should be a wealthy country. It is blessed with tremendous natural resources.

Something is really wrong there. Probably corruption. I wonder where that comes from?

The megafarms in the US are nowhere near those in Mexico, but they are the sort of US enterprises that create a constant demand for the cheapest labor possible, legal or illegal.

>> Since the beginning of time, someone, somewhere, toiled in the sun for shit pay.

A man owned a small farm in Indiana. The Indiana State Wage & Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.

“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent.

“Well,” replied the farmer, “there’s my farm hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board.

“The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board.

“Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also gets to sleep with my wife occasionally.”

“That’s the guy I want to talk to -— the half-wit,” says the agent.

“You’re talking to him now”, said the farmer.

We shouldn’t invade Mexico. Because then we’d be obliged to rebuild it for them, a’la Germany and Japan.

We may as well rebuild it, we’re paying for it anyway.

You can’t have “broccoli” without “coli”.
