(CNN) -- The debate over the "Redskins" name in sports isn't just at the professional level.
Students at an Oklahoma City high school were refusing to go into Capitol Hill High School on Wednesday morning because their mascot no longer has the controversial name, according to CNN affiliate KOCO.
Dozens of students stood on the lawn outside the building rather than heading into class.
The city's public school board voted Monday to change the name in response to Native American students' feelings that the mascot name was offensive. The vote to change the mascot, which has been in place since the 1920s, was unanimous.
School administrators will immediately start phasing out the Redskins mascot and will create a committee of current and former students and community members to pick a new mascot before the end of the spring semester, spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin said in a statement, according to The Oklahoman.

Marquette University used to be the Warriors.
Then some squaw got her undies in a knot and they changed the mascot to the flapping turkeys or some such.
To this day when they call me for contributions I tell them the same thing. Change back to the warriors or don’t bother calling again. I don’t support politically correct wimps.
The students at this highschool are right for standing up for their history!
These kinds of open defiance should inform the gestapo that, while they can kowtow to the latest victim group, there are those who won’t.
A college I attended used to be called the “Chiefs.” A few years ago, they caved to the whiners and changed their name. I haven’t contributed one dime to any of their alumni drives since, and I make it clear that it’s because I won’t endorse cowardice.
The left demands that cities with Christian place names be changed at once.

I have two public-school-educated, dumb questions:
1) If Native American-associted names are soooo offensive to soooooo many people (actually, only a few, most of whom are not Native American, including Elizabeth Warren), why are names like Ambassadors, or Anchormen, or Bishops, or Boilermakers, or Cowboys, or Dutchmen, or Engineers, or Friars, or Knights, or Ladies, or Lumberjacks, or Mariners, or Mechanics, or Olympians, or Patriots, or Saints, or Vixens not offensive to those groups of people?
2) How long before PETA decides that the use of animal names for team nicknames are offensive?

According to wiki... it is “Gargoyle/Rebels.” The newspaper used to be the Confederate. Now it is the Gargoyle.

Controversy
When Denver Public Schools named its four cardinal direction high schools (East, West, North and South) each took a mascot and imagery associated with that direction. For example West High School took the Cowboy as its mascot.
South High School took imagery from the civil war, specifically from the Confederate States of America. This included taking the Johnny Reb head as its mascot, and using the Confederate Flag to a lesser extent. The imagery was incorporated into the name of the yearbook, The Johnny Reb, (changing it from The Tower Book) and school newspaper, The Confederate.
The images and mascot began to cause controversy in the late 1970s. By 1980, South’s first African American principal, Harold Scott, suggested that the mascot be changed to the Penguin. He did not anticipate the attachment the student body had to the name “Rebel” nor the furor that ensued and the suggestion was dropped.
Gradually, due to the growing change in public attitudes the use of the Confederate Flag would fall from use. The school’s yearbook and newspaper became known as the Gargoyle. Even the Johnny Reb Head would be seen less and less.
During the 2007-2008 school year the student body began discussing changing the mascot. They eventually decided on a gargoyle with the school’s famous clock tower in the background. On February 19, 2009, the students made a presentation to the Denver Public School board asking for the change, which was granted. In a compromise with school alumni, the name “Rebel” was kept.
There is still some controversy over whether the new mascot is a griffin or a gargoyle. Another Denver Public School, Grant Middle School, claimed the griffin a decade or so before, after it was forced to change its mascot from the Blue Devil.
I was thinking from a “politically correct” point of view. Something that won’t be controversial to the fair-minded liberals.
Arvada HS west of Denver used to be the Redskins. Now they are the Reds. Guess commies are OK.

I swear I can’t get that song out of my head after hearing it only once. Do you happen to know if that was just sarcasm? I’m not a fan of that one.
