Russia's economy is crashing and its currency appears to be in free fall.

The ruble plunged by about 12% Monday, meaning it's lost nearly 50% against the dollar this year. Early Tuesday in Russia, the central bank hiked its key interest rate for a sixth time this year to 17% from 10.5%.

Watch and learn, see how everyday people in Russia cope with this. The world financial system remains in a very precarious state. It could be us someday, so I wouldn’t gloat.

Unfortunately, you haven’t heard the end of the new Russian TZAR, Mr Putin. If he has to protect his place in the Russian higher archy, he will start a war somewhere...

He already started a war in Ukraine. That's when his troubles began. So you think he's going to double down on starting wars.

You don’t get it. We just have to suck slightly less then everyone else.

You must be a republican; that's been their campaign platform for years. ;)

It needs to be harsher. My bill would ban ALL trade with Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus except humanitarian aid, it would ban Russia from the ISS, it would declare Russia a terrorist state, and it would ban all travel by US citizens to Russia and the other states listed. It would also close the US embassy in Russia and require the expulsion of the Russian embassy in the US.

“You don’t get it. We just have to suck slightly less then everyone else.’

there’s a part of me that believes that. because really, what possibilities are there...

politicians are so evil, they only want to stay in power, even though they know the whole thing collapses.

they know we do suck less, and the world parks its money with us.

and, the scariest, soros or some other secret powers want to bring it all down, and they have for decades bought so many people off, and maybe have used asassinations, that nobody dares challenge them.

America headed for crash as oil prices plummet and housing bubble bursts.

It is far more likely that Russia has engineered the decline of its ruble in order position itself as the low-cost producer and thereby destabilize the global economy and especially force the high-cost producers (in America) out of business.

It is absurd to think that a country that is among the richest in natural resources would be brought to the point of "economic freefall" by whatever insignificant measures the Obama administration has done (with great fanfare).

Russia is among the most dominant players in oil markets and at times the single most dominant player. It can exert tremendous influence over the market.

It is also not unusual for countries to devalue their currencies for their own gain, and should it surprise anyone that Russia would do so aggressively, vindictively, almost as an act of war, without regard for the welfare of its common citizens?

I thought FReepers might appreciate a perspective that didn't originate in disinformation brainstorming session.

Yet Russia continues to issue military rhetoric much like that of Iran.

I do not think they care, Russia has a long term contract to sell oil to China, and it’s not priced in USD.

Winter is almost here, and Europe is cold

"if we’re borrowing a trillion a year with no intention and no ability to pay it off, does anyone think this is not our future?"

Watch for one of the two key interest rates here to go up. Russia is already well into that process. A little background info follows.

Levels of domestic production (on our own soil, not American-"based") have much to do with it. So far China is getting ahead and is even one of the world's major oil producers.

Saudi Arabia is pi$$ed at Obama for helping Iran.

This will soon result in the death of the petro-dollar, and the intro of the petro-yuan.

Worse and more critical is what has always happened in these cases: the Kleptocracy has taken over. It’s nearly impossible to clean that up, ever without massive bloodshed.

We had an US AG in Illinois get started on the first few of the 5000+ political powerhouses, mostly Dems, but with sufficient GOP support aka the Combine, who belong in jail forever or in front of a firing squad. They quickly shortened his leash.

ussia is among the most dominant players in oil markets

Russia would also be on the level of, say, an African country, without its natural resources. Half its government revenue depends on selling fuel, which is why the lower cost of oil is killing them. The only other thing they have going for them is their cheap vodka.

Russia does not really produce anything other than oil, gas and other natural resources. That is why the ruble is in crashing.

This is what Russia exports.
