From the Sydney Morning Herald:
The siege in Sydney's CBD and its terrible end received saturation coverage on American cable news, with at least one commentator lamenting Australia's tough gun laws.
Speaking on Fox News after police stormed the Lindt cafe, Charles Hurt, a writer with the conservative newspaper The Washington Times and a Fox News contributor, said: "These people are hell bent to kill innocent people In a free society there is nothing you can do about it. You can't prevent all these things from happening, which is why most Americans, when they see this stuff play out they think about guns and it is why they think about personal gun ownership and being able to protect yourself, protect your family and protect your neighbours.

Hurt appears to have been referring to a Pew Research poll published last week that found for the first time in two decades of its own research that more people support gun rights than gun control, by a margin of 52 per cent to 46 per cent.
"I think it is sort of interesting that, in Australia, they have banned guns, just about all guns, for personal ownership, yet somehow this insane killer managed to get himself a shotgun," Hurt said.
The host of the program added that after "a couple massacres in Australia there was massive gun control in that country, where people turned in their weapons because they did not want to have them any more and this was sort of hailed by gun control advocates as the poster child for the way things should be.

Yeah, they didn't want them anymore. Riiiight.
No guns? Unexpected???
Well it's a good thing we non longer live in a free society!
Kick the slimes out ! None Zero Nada! No praying to mecca allowed on US soil. No mosques. No nothing. Banished. Outlawed. Criminalized.
I know most everyone will feel safer! No one except the ones that murder or support the murderers will have any change in their way of living!
If just one person there had a gun.
Liberals just refuse to understand (with credit to Thulsa Doom):
The GUN is not the problem..the gun is weak. It is the hand that wields it that is strong.
Without an evil wielding it, the gun is merely a very decorative paper weight, guaranteed to weigh the paper down.
Anyone calling for a separate justice system (sharia) should be seen as an enemy of the state and be removed from the country. Period.
Funny why dont you see seiges at gun stores??? Or police stations? Hmmmm what could the connection be.... hmmm think think...

How many were turned in and how many were lost in tragic walk-about accidents in the Outback where the gun was confused with a boomerang, thrown at a kangaroo and didn't fly back?
Ping to you Nat.
The laws in OZ concerning gun control are not as horrendous as being portrayed. Granted they are a bit more restictive. But citizens can and own shotguns, rifles, semi-automatic rifles/pistols and revolvers.
Yep they gotta have a license/permit based on what the owner wants to own/carry.
I’m no authority mind you, on Aussie gun laws. Just passsing on what i’ve learned recently
2nd Amendment bump for later....
Yes - all correct, although I'd add that semi-automatic and hand gun licences are quite rare, and not that easy to get.
Australia's gun laws aren't good. It's just they are not as bad as they sometimes get presented both overseas and in Australia. And the inaccuracies matter, because they often make people less likely to exercise what rights they do still have in law. Only a tiny number of people have a handgun licence, and a lot more could, but never try because they believe it's much harder to get one than it is.
If there are more of these incidents there we might see some changes in their gun laws if the right pols are elected and the people push for it.
As everyone knows; in this country it’s a constant battle to fight the gun grabbers. One that never ends.
