California's health insurance exchange said 144,178 people have newly enrolled in Obamacare coverage during the first month of sign ups.

Officials also reported that 216,423 people have joined Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program for low-income people, since Nov. 15. That's in addition to the 2.2 million who had already enrolled in 2014 as part of the health-law expansion.

Do everything you can to stay healthy

Unfortunately, we really aren't now -chronic stuff- that's what concerns me.

Let me know what you decide to do as far as Medicare Advantage or a Medigap/supplement plan. I'd be interested in hearing what direction you go.

144,000? they are probably referring to the people who just visited the obozocare web site in the state. Most see the cost and realize they can't afford it unless they are on 100% government assistance.

How do you afford it after, even with 100% government assistance? Those deductibles and copays will kill you.

Re: “Medicare Advantage or a Medigap”

I just completed my first level of research on that subject.

Looks like Medicare Advantage is the right choice for me.

I'm very comfortable with the HMO system. I had Kaiser Permanente for 7 years in Portland, and, though it was not perfect, the cost and service were completely satisfactory.

I've had Virginia Mason for the last year, and, once again, completely satisfactory. I haven't called V-Mason yet for an exact quote or an exact MA plan, but it looks less expensive than Medigap. Plus, I live directly across the street from one of their satellite clinics, and their main Downtown clinic and hospital is just a 25 minute bus ride away.

I don't have much discretionary income, so I spend 95% of my time in King County and won't have to worry about being outside their network. And my health is excellent, unless I eat too much chocolate candy or potato chips, in which case my A-Fib and my blood pressure go right up to the high normal red lines. And, incredibly, I need no medications, which is a huge cost saver.

Here's a question for you - have you started Social Security yet?

Currently, my plan is to delay until age 70. Health-wise and financially that seems like the correct bet today. But, long term, both Soc-Sec and Medicare are unsustainable. And, I don't have a lot of confidence in the generosity and the earning power of the majority Black and Hispanic work force that will be paying most of my bills in 20 years, especially since all of them have been taught to hate and blame every bad thing on white people.

No, I just turned 60. Had to quit working when I was 44 so SS won't be very much. But I'm always planning/worrying about the future.
