SONY PULLS THE PLUG ON 'THE INTERVIEW'
TMZ ^ | 12/17/2014 | TMZ Staff

Sony has pulled the plug on the XMAS release of "The Interview," after a number of theater chains bailed.

Sony execs felt their out was if distributors yanked the film because of safety concerns. That would give Sony an out without directly bending to the hackers. Sony just released a statement, saying, "In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release."

The statement goes on, saying, "We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public."

The execs are underscoring the distinction between pulling the film because of the distributors rather than out of fear, saying, "We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

The precedent was set by hundreds of terrorist attacks mounted by North Korea against South Korea, topped by this operation. Sony execs were lulled into complacency by Kim Jong-il's lack of response to Team America, suppressed presumably by a president (Bush) Kim saw as just straining at the leash to bomb Pyongyang to rubble. Obama, by comparison is a pussycat. Obama would probably invade North Korea in response to a mass casualty attack, but the current Kim may be betting he won't.

Either that, or he gets a monster cut when it eventually is released and viewed by millions due to the hype this has stirred up...

Since when does a company ever pull distribution on a terrible movie? A good movie is a rarity.

Disappointing. I wanted to see this big time. I think Sony is making a mistake. I guess all the movies are going to be able to be pulled if someone idiotic group doesn’t like it. So sick of nosey bodies.

It seems like an interesting story. Go kill Kim.

Nothing wrong with the story, and the previews DO look funny! I usually like the films that these guys star in.

I'm just going off of what I've read, that the film is a stinker even to those who have enjoyed other Rogen/Franco films, as I have.

Ha! Congrats to Kimmy. He showed the world what snivelling, worthless cowards these Hollywood libs are. I find this whole thing hilarious.

The North Koreans aren't a bunch of anonymous internet commenters making death threats. They have mounted hundreds of one-way missions against South Koreans, capped by this spectacular attack. Their operatives are skilled and determined stone killers. Showbiz people can't be hermits. If Kim orders the assassination of specific people involved in Hollywood productions, there is nothing that that can prevent them from being planted.

Sony has shown what it is made of. There will be additional demands and additional censorship of movies.

I suspect that the real reason that sonny is pulling the plug is that some of the blackmail was illegal stuff that the company has done. I bet through back door channels that the company got the group to threaten violence to the theaters showing the movies so that sonny could cancel the showing of the movie and save face. My guess is that some of the E- mails are evidence of illegal activitiess by corporate big wigs of the type that would put some in jail and open the company to lawsuits in the Multimillions for stolen intellectual property. the problem sonny has is that release of the E- mails by North Korea could possibly bankrupt the company by lawsuits from differing sources

Happens all the time. The remake of "Red Dawn" sat in limbo for years. First they had to change the aggressors from China to North Korea and it still could get distribution. Only when many of the then-unknown cast members became big stars years later did the film get released.

This isn't an idiotic group. This is Kim's people telling Sony to back off or else.

No matter how lousy the movie, it is the duty of our government to insure that our freedom of expression is protected and those who threaten any of our freedoms shall be stopped by whatever means necessary.

If these clowns were in charge back in 85, Back To The Future would never have been released, because they had Libyans are terrorists.

We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression

Somehow I doubt "free expression" and "Sony" have much to do with each other.

I agree. This is pure cowardice.

Too complicated. The image you have of the Kim family is that they are a bunch of buffoons. South Koreans see them as a dynasty of stone killers who mounted hundreds of terrorist operations against the South, capped by this operation.

The difference is that Hollywood doesn’t have an army to fight back. Obama does.
